A WIP also has an obligation to be done properly and I’m pretty sure 99% of us would agree you sand it and paint it before putting the decals on. Putting those on now is just lazy and more importantly, a gateway to not doing the job right. As the job goes on one justifies “Well I don’t want to paint it now, I mean… I got those decals on there and it looks okay so…”
If BigJon sanded down that van and prepped it, taking this project stage-by-stage and really put in good effort into it, I would be impressed. If it turned out only half as good as that pic that groschopf posted then I would be impressed. I’m not even saying go out and get a $4000 paint job, you could Earl Schieb it at home for all I care but for God’s sake DO SOMETHING that involves a PLAN and not just being lazy.
On a budget I’d think that pool ladder for the side is a great idea. I have a black aluminum ladder to contribute for free if anyone wants one ( you pay for postage ) but a pool ladder may cost less in the long run.
Sounds like you’ve never been to California PC. The highway is full of vehicles in much worse shape with company logo’s and phone numbers written on with a sharpie. It’s pretty sad
That being said I know that a budget is always going to be an issue on these projects but even a Maaco paint job would be worth the investment. This project has some serious potential if done right. I can already picture the roof rack.

Has any right to actually tell anyone was is “Done Properly” with their own stuff; especially not a custom job. You can not obligate anyone to do anything. You are nor is anyone else the damn prop police.
You can provide constructive criticism, point in general directions and provide advice, ask questions and hell I’ll even accept just being an asshole if it really makes you feel good.

You’re not gonna like everything; I don’t like many of the props I see that some people gush over. There is nothing wrong with that by no means am I saying to give praise everywhere. But its not my business to tell them what makes it done properly

its always been a frame of mind and common sense to paint the car before decals are applied. if you have it professionally done thats how it would be approached. not paint around decals.

This is kind of a cop-out answer, but what you should realize is that one accepts the title of “tool” whenever one converts their car into a ghostbustersmobile.
If you’re concerned about money, why are you building this car so that you have do everything twice? Apply vinyl to unpainted metal, remove vinyl, paint metal, reapply vinyl. You HAD to? More cop-out answers, I think.
Truth be told, it would actually be in the vehicle’s best interest to get a coat of paint on there, even if it’s roll-on rustoleum. Hell, you could knock out that hood with a single can of spray paint, and make it look even better if you use a spray can handle to even your strokes. If you want an even-handed criticism from me, I’ll say that an Ecto-van is not a bad idea. However, when it comes to not thinking of putting your $15 into five cans of spray paint to hit the panels with or not bothering to put that minimal effort in before applying the logo and stripes, I can’t decide which is worse.
This whole project reeks of incompetence, with the typical “I’m going to make it great later,” excuses. Someone starts a project without thinking it through, and it never really goes anywhere despite great plans. And instead of doing it right, the builder idealizes the shortcoming retools them into positive attributes. Then we get an explanation along the lines of “I’m pretending it’s battle damage!” because the builder is now okay with the prop looking like ass. Then everyone expresses their opinions and either the project goes away, or the builder quits because everyone was “too mean.”
We’ve all seen it before, and I’m just calling it like it is.

Boomerjinks, at this point I really don’t care how you feel about the project. It doesn’t change that it’s mine and I’m still doing it the way I want. Sorry to burst your bubble. I know you apparently have some sort of beef with anyone from the state of Ohio for some reason. I’m sorry that your car ended up breaking down in Ohio, but it wasn’t my fault personally. You’ve got a nice ride and you’ve definitely put a lot of time and money into it. I wish we could all have the time and money to have cars like yours.
Thanks to all you who have faith in the idea. I’ve already gotten a lot of positive comments from around my local community and the project isn’t even nearly finished. My goal ultimately is to have fun with it, and so far I have. I’ll post more updates as it gets closer to July where we’re taking it downtown for the local community parade. The parade is used to seeing decorated golf carts…so the folks will get a kick out of this thing.
Golf carts, you say… Hmm, perhaps I’ll do an Ecto vehicle as well. lol

I find it odd that you’re telling me what to do or not do, in regards to telling someone else what to do or not do. Bit of a double-standard in ye olde Spooky household, eh?
What Boomer, myself and a few others are saying is if you’re going to do a job, why not do it right? If you’re going to be sloppy and lazy then expect bad feedback.
Why?.. Have I touched a bit of a nerve with you Spooky? Are you sort of lazy and sloppy at heart? Perhaps defending someone else’s crappy job helps you stand up the to the old high school bully who pushed you around along ago, or some other unresolved childhood issue? You really come off sounding like you’ve got a horse in this race. Some invested interest that makes you want to come out swinging over basically nothing.
It’s your issue to deal with.
Once again, it’s not about the point being made, it’s about how it’s made.
Put simply–be critical, tell them how you think they could a better job, and don’t be a d*ck about it. People aren’t even going to attempt to take your advice because you’ve garnered a reputation for being a jerk, instead of someone who motivates them to do it better.
A few guys on here are just getting brushed off with, “Oh, that a**hole…” instead of being looked at as someone who knows what they’re talking about. People don’t respect that, and then you’ll just keep seeing what you’ve characterized as shoddy workmanship over and over again.
How does that old saying go? You attract more flies with honey than with vinegar?

Abstain from negativity- you’ll live longer. Constructive criticism is a novel concept too. Maybe GB Fans would flourish more and gain more members if we all weren’t so venomous all the time. I have a maroon Dodge Caravan with obvious bondo. I’m not getting it painted, I don’t have the $$$. But I’ll probably ecto-ize it for shots (it’s in my mvie already) because it’s funny and I’m not PERMANENTLY altering my only car to be a GB mobile.
BigJon, did it come with those cool utility racks? MAybe you could make metal racks on the sides for the Proton packs? A basket for traps? Maybe poke around the dump or car graveyard?
I know the whole “got kid, two mortgages, etc.” Learn from your critics, ignore the pettyness, do what you can. We all aren’t living with mommy or on our own with big $$$ or belong to a group who puts money in the pot (what I wouldn’t give to be in AZ with those AWESOME GB’s) : )
