Booster frame wings question

Hi all,

I’ve been trawling through the various threads to try and learn everything about the booster frame before I attempt to build one.

I am working off Stefan’s plans which are a great starting point, but I’m aware that new discoveries are made all the time. Which gets to my conundrum.

I have read a few threads were talented members are making resin frames from actual components pencils and the like, but they note in discussion that the frame wings (outer profiled sections) are flat and not tapered as shown on the plans. However, when I look across the various reference photos most appear to have some tapering. Now I’m not so sure which is correct. Maybe my eyes are staying to play tricks from starting at images for so long.

Was there a difference in the frame construction between the two movies? Ie one tapered, one not. Or maybe even between packs?

All help in resolving the above is appreciated as always.

Pete.

Hi all, me again.

Seeing there has been no takers so far on the issue above, I have included some photos and thread links below to show my confusion on this topic.

Here is a link to nick-a-trons cool resin booster frame build Boosting the booster. - Proton Packs - GBFans.com, referencing the third thread reply

I know that Nick is a superb builder and the photo on the third page shows a excellent booster frame with flat wings.

Similarly, I found the same discussion occur in pchrisbosh1’s thread Booster frame.. - #2 by ■■■■■■ - Proton Packs - GBFans.com, referring to first reply by ■■■■■■

And I must say yet again, another fine booster frame build results in this thread.

Now onto the Sony Lobby pack reference photos. One of the better reference photos I found is:

In this shot it appears that the booster frame wings from a top down perspective the wings appear to taper downwards from where they attach to frame (near the pencils) as per Stefan’s planes.

I’ve found a few other shots that suggest similar on the original packs but aren’t as clear as this one.

However on other photos like this one from the Venkman Pack photos at Bill Murray's GB2 Hero Proton Pack Reference Photos - #24 by Smog - Proton Packs - GBFans.com

image It appears that the frame is indeed flat.

So hopefully this better explains my confusion. And any clarity that other can provide is appreciated.

Oh, and I’m building a GB1 pack and would like to make a booster frame that best represents that movie. So if anyone has any imagery that shows this packs in details links would be greatly appreciated.

*** Also, none of the above is a dig against other members builds of products in any way; In fact its my respect for nic-a-tron and pchrisbosh1’s builds and pack knowledge that makes me question this point so heavily.

Thanks all.

Pete

Two things:

The frames were sanded/tightened down so the back was rounded a bit and sits more flush to the tube.

All the packs are 30+ years old and aren’t well cared for. Parts sag due to heat and age.

It all comes down to what version of a pack you want to do, actual or idealized.

Hi Jack,

Thanks for the reply. I hear what you are saying about neglect of the original packs and the warping of various parts and features. Plenty of photos on the site show the effects of time.

At the end of the day I’ve decided to go down the flat path, as it will be easier to build and apears accepted in the community.

Also I came across your booster frame build thread, nice job. I notice that someone mentioned the top window size could be reduced and you noted that the frame’s height should be less than the noted 6 inches. Are you able to share the updated dimension, or PM them to me?

My plan is to build one out of aluminium, pretty much in the same manner that you built your master. I’ll use aluminium stair nosing for the wing profiled sections in place of the rubber mat. So I may have to compromise on the width slightly to match the profile I find.

Anyway, thanks for the info and any further help.

Cheers

Pete.
