This has been on my mind most of the day and id appreciate it someone could tell me : ) Does the bottom edge of the bumper sit flush with the bottom edge of the pack shell?
I ask because looking at Stefans plans there seems to be 6/7 mm clearance from the top of the Cyclotron to the under edge of the bumper, thats not taking into account the 4 circles (do they have a name?) That’s sitting flush… now to me, looking at photos like this… second in top row
There seems to be much more clearance than 7mm. If you add on the height of the 4 circles ontop of the Cyclotron they would virtually be touching the underside of the bumper. So : ) either the bumper is raised slightly from the bottom edge of the pack shell or im missing something : )
The arms of the bumper should reach almost all the way to the back of the shell to where the motherboard meets the shell and the bumper itself should sit about 1/2" off of the cyclotron. The arms dont need to touch the back edge but they should be very close. The circles are referred to as the cyclotron rings.
One more question, I think I know the answer but I have to ask : ) Put so much work into this I dont want to get it wrong, even if it is a stupid question.
Is the 1/2 inch gap from the top of the Cyclotron to the underside of the Bumper, is that to point A or B?
From the measurements it has to be B, this means cyclotron rings are quite close to the bumper on the right under A but I cant see any other way it could work. From jettajeffro’s picture I think im right, odd shape the bumper.
when it comes to placing and bolting down the bumper, dont measure anything, look at reference pics and eyeball it.
when placing the small spacer between the cyclotron and bumper, disregard the distance between the rings and the back of the bumper. the bolt will come through from the inside of the cyclotron up through the back of the bumper right in the middle of the back of the square faceplate.
Sorry from partially hijacking the thread, but I will also be attaching my bumper soon, once I get Exoray’s bumper knob. Truth is, I have no idea how to attach the bumper knob to the bumper. Perhaps using a threaded rod, drilling through the cyclotron and bumper and attaching a nut from the inside? Flynn said there were 2 ways to attach it: “mount through the bumper and into the cyclotron or attempt a blind mount contained just in the bumper”. Thing is I am not familiar with that term (language barrier). That is why I am confused with the “spacer”. Where is the spacer supposed to go?
In the pic posted, where is the spacer located? I do see something at the back of the bumper knob. Is that part of the knob, or a separate piece bolted from the back of the cyclotron?
I have one really long bolt through the ion knob, through the bumper, and into the cyclotron. The spacer is covering the threads of the bolt in the space between the bumper and the cyclotron. Drill a hole in the middle of the bumper and the dead center of the cyclotron. Put the bolt through the knob, bumper, spacer and then into the center hole of the cyclotron. Tighten that down and then you will be able to attach the bumper on the sides of the cyclotron alot easier.
I was waiting for the knob to arrive to mount the bumper. Last night I said what the heck and decided to attach the bumper! It came out real nice! Now that is firmly attached, it’ll be easier to drill all the way through bumper and cyclotron in order to attach the knob once it gets here. I was thinking of getting a long rod and do exactly as you suggested.
May I ask, what did you use as a spacer to cover the threads on the rod? It looks cleaner that way!
I stumbled upon it in the bolt section of a hardware store. You could find an aluminum tube from a hobby store and cut it down, but the one I found in the bolt section was perfect. Really depends on how big the gap is on your pack. On my first pack my knob is just connected to the bumper and not through the cyclotron and the bumper is just connected at the sides, so if the bumper starts to come loose it starts to slump down.
