Any tips for this like how far off the shell should the bumper float, or is it flush mounted? I know this is going to sound crazy but I’m also concerned about the alignment. Again, any tips would be greatly appreciated!
Most people I have seen use 2 screws or rivets on each side to keep the bumper from acting like a handle on an ice cream bucket, it would swivel all over. Also the screw that holds the aluminum ion knob on runs through the ion knob, the bumper and is fastened to the inside of the whole pack shell. I believe the movie packs were done like this as well. I would recommend screws, painted black, for easy on/off should you need to remove it.
Two screws with washers on each side.. and then one bolt in the middle through the Ion Knob into the Cyclotron. The bumper it self is about 1/2" to 1" set off of the Cyclotron.
IF you are scratch building it. i have used funks and propfans bumper and both of them were fairly close to the front of the cyclotron when mounted the way shown in that pic
I’m about to do this too.I have funk’s shell and bumper and it seems like the bumper is too wide for the shell.
In order to screw it in I will have to bend it towards the shell on both sides.
any ideas?
I had the same deal with mine.
I used nuts to space it out either side. ![]()
i drilled holes in the bumper first and then put the bumper flush against the shell and marked the holes.
I have a pack shell and bumper from Loveusmokey on e-bay. But, get this.. the bumper doesnt exactly fit the shell, and its one of her bumpers! It is a very tight fit, so I think I’m going to have to grind, or sand the inside of the bumpers arms down a little to buy me some clearance.
I ordered a shell from them about a month ago, and it looked pretty good. I sanded all the black paint they put on it, as it wasnt a very nice finish. I’m sure that was just for looks on E-Bay. SO, now that I have the paint removed and the surfaces clean and ready for epoxy I was trying to dry fit some of this stuff together and I was having the darndest time with the bumper making that look right.
Thanks a bunch for the tips!
I have one of her shells enroute. I saw the feedback in the feedback section, but I ultimately decided to give it a go anyway because pack shells really aren’t that widely available. They are very few and far between. Especially since Funkzilla’s sad departure. This is the biggest GB fans and GB prop site. I’m glad to hear that someone is trying to use the shell instead of just sending it back. That is encourageing to me.
I to have recently received a shell and Bumper from Loveusmokey. Paint job isn’t very good but I nearly always respray props to my liking anyway.
Don’t have a problem with the Bumper, that seems to fit very well. Also bought and Ion Arm and HGA, both of which are fine as well.
I also bought a completed thrower from them and have to say I’m less than impressed for the money I paid. Very poor finish on it, it looks like it’s been rushed. I’ll build everything myself in the future, at least then I know it’ll be done right!
How much did you pay for the thrower, and do you have any pics of it? I wonder if she sells the pieces separately. I’ll have to ask her. Seems like loveusmonkey is our only source for shells at the moment – at least until Exoray gets his production line going. I can’t complain too much.
OK, so I wrote to Loveusmonkey on Ebay and told them about the problem I had with the bumper not fitting the pack shell. They offered to replace it if I shipped it back to them. How cool is that? Hopefully the replacement part fits. She thought that maybe when the current part set up, it somehow twisted in the mold and offered to send me a new one. Anyway, you cant beat that for help.
I just bought one and it looked thicker on resin in some places. Does yours?
Resin on the bumper or the pack shell?
My bumper looks great, but it also was purchased back in December. They were selling pack shells back then for about $200. OK, so fast forward to last month and now the pack shells are $285. I had written them and they said that the price increase was because they wanted o redo the shell, to make it more accurate. So I figure my bumper fit the old shell mold, but not the new one. Its off by about 1/2 inch. Anyway, they agreed to replace it with a new one. Hopefully it fits.
My Shell did have some thin spots on it, but I went out and purcahsed some Alumilite resin and now I’m building up those thin spots. The stuff is incredible. Mix equal parts together, stir for about 35 seconds, pour and in about 20 more seconds or so it changes color and hardens. I have built up some spots to provide more stability, and I also filled in the holes they pre-drilled for the injectors.
They had holes drilled for the injector tube, but dammit if it wasnt a 1.5" hole. OK, so good luck trying to find a piece of PVC that fits that. The 1" tube is just a bit too small, and the 1.25" tube is too big. SO, I just poured some resin into the holes after I dammed it up, and bingo.. its nice ane smooth now. So now I can install my injectors how I want then, not how the holes were predrilled. That resin is fun to work with!
