Can anyone recommend how to make a belt gizmo?

I know that a Sanyo ICC 8080D was used for the original and also a Minolta calculator can be used. They are just so rare to come by and I don’t want to just make a makeshift piece of junk out of any old circuit board.

I’ve see a couple tutorials on how to make them but was just curious to get some of your guys feedback.

Thanks a lot for everyones input. It’s greatly appreciated!

Find something that looks large enough with a chipset in it. Gut it. Get a Tape Measure holder from Home Depot, paint it, shove it in, viola.

That’s the easiest way possible.

You could go the step further and order one of the resin models and paint it yourself, then purchase the accurate nixie tubes and glue them in. Members are selling both in the fore sale section.

You can also print the circuit board off,it’s here on the board you can search it if you interested in doing it that way it’s the way I done mine came out looking real good, you can search and see pic’s of other people gizmo’s that went the route I did. They look good!

mine is made out of 2 NES carts , 1 N64 cart, gutted house phone, cable spliter, and a cell phone…

There are way too many ways that different people make the gizmo, just find a way that works for you

there is also a great write up here… http://www.tk2441.co.uk/gb-belt.htm

Zander that’s absolutely genius. It looks really good too.

I think I might try and go along with the link that Sledge posted. I’ve been contemplating her idea for a little while now but just seems a little difficult but I think I may give it a shot. I’ll post pics when I start making progress.

Thanks everyone else for your input!

I’m in the process of collecting the bits to make two of these.

I got the Nixie tubes from “jetparts!” on ebay (Link to their shop) I have checked and ones i got are IV-9’s (They have some listed - Click Nixie Tubes). They are based in Russia but have no issues shipping internationally and accept paypal as payment. Mine only took about a week to arrive.

I’ll buy a length of cheap wire and strip the insulation off of them to make the different coloured sleeves for the nixies.

I spoke to my local electrical components shop (“Maplin” here in the UK) and told them I was looking for some flat disc capacitors that “had to look right but their electrical performance is of no importance”. I described them to him and he said “I’m sure we’ll have something like that in stock as they are fairly cheap and common” and suggested I pop down and have a look through the stock, so that’s pretty much sorted. May even do that this weekend!

As for the mother-board, I’ll be grabbing one of Nick-a-tron’s excellent resin casts. (Link to his parts list, Belt Gizmo at the bottom)

The daughter board I’ll be using one of the PCBs out of my MT500 (I gutted it for weight reasons on my belt and thought the boards in it woudl be perfect with a little tweaking and soldering). See…

As for the wire to connect the two, I’ll either use a shaver power cable or more likely a phone cable coil like this one (Link)

The holster I’ll be getting from Multimedia Mayhem. Check them out, they have loads of fantastic bits on there. (Link)

When I get started I’ll be making a thread and posting my progress. Hopefully I’ll have all the bits by the end of the month.

Nick-a-tron sells a resin Belt Gixmo kit (as well as real nixies and capacitors when he has them in stock).

Yeah I suggested the resin kit from Nick in my post above, I’ve seen him selling them with nixie tubes but when I asked him about capacitors I didnt get a response (he probably just missed it as I posted it in a thread I think)

These are the nixie tubes I got from that seller I mentioned above:

I could have really done with 18 of them not 16 for two belt gizmos but the end one on the calculator board is a little different (I assume it’s the +/- symbol or something that isn’t a number) so I’m sure I’ll be able to come up with something.

Anyway, the tubes are readily available and fairly cheep. This little lot set me back $28 inc international shipping.

Sorry Cheex… for some reason I didn’t see your mention of him.

Thanks again everyone.
