FS: Another^4 Last Run of Real Gizmo and Daughterboard Printed Circuit Board Kits

If you are infact at the $25 price point I am in for 1.

In for one.

Hello Aaron,

There are several great Gizmo build threads. Instead of using some styrene board that you attach a label to and then cut out and drill the holes, you get to start with a circuit board that is real, already the proper size and shape and has all of the holes pre-drilled (the printed circuit board I am offering has 691 holes - and I am glad that an automated tool is doing the drilling!)

Other than soldering wires rather than gluing, the rest of the build is very similar to what is described in the build threads.

Most of the parts (resistors, diodes and caps) for the styrene board builds are glued in, and you could do that with the circuit board, but soldering them in is more authentic (and not too difficult). Since most of the parts are only for looks, the soldering is really just to hold them in and you don’t have to do a very good job to have them securely attached. Soldering is don on the back side, so it won’t show too much.

There are 8 integrated circuits that you do need to make out of something and then attach to the board. Look at the Gizmo build threads to see what is needed to make those. I have a few ideas and will post when I have played around and let you know if it works well or not.

Lastly, you want something for the “display”. A small platform needs to be added and then 8 to 11 Nixie tubes (or ribbon cables in plastic tubes, or pen parts, etc) should be attached. If you want, real Nixie tubes can still be purchased, but the shipping time is usually on the order of a month or so.

I’d be in for 1 depending how close the final product looks to the original board

This is exciting! There appears to be enough interested Ghostheads to make this more affordable. I am going to move ahead with this and order boards in the next few days. I will purchase enough to justify the $25 price and hopefully sell most of them (got to keep a few for me!).

I also have test parts ordered and they should arrive tomorrow. It is harder to order parts that look appropriate - most places do not have great information on color and texture of parts, and for this project that is more important than the electrical specs.

I will post pictures of the parts I can offer in the kits, as soon as I am pleased with the selection. More info should be available in the next couple of days.

The Orange LEDs have arrived and I think they look pretty nice - I will offer the LEDs and associated controller parts as a separate parts kit since it is not movie accurate but does add more life to the Gizmo…

I too am interested!

Yes ..I want thee whole shaa-bang. Any Idea on what the kit with all the bells and whistles is going to run…

.

When I built mine, the real components alone ran about $50 after shipping.

Thanks Nate…

Told you it would be worth throwing an interest thread up on the forum Doug!

I’m toying with the idea of getting myself a nixie bar (including an error box) 3D Printed. A friend of mine has been getting stuff printed recently (to make awesome Captain America the First Avenger Helmet Stands) and the process looks to be relatively cheap considering.

I’ve done a few sketches and it will be pretty cool if it works out!

I’m interested in at least one, maybe two depends on when payment is due.

Id like to offer 3d modeling/designing the bar/shelf and error box to get 3d printed as an addition to the kit if we can work something out.

A few users here have had my 3d modeling work done for them and can vouch for it. let’s make this the be all replica gizmo kits.

I’m in for one.

I may be interested in one. I’d like to see what the full kit would look like. The fact that there is a possibility of a nixie shelf coming with it is a BIG plus for me!

I know that the original chips are out of production. Are there any available at all that are similar and could fit in the spaces on the board? Personally, I don’t like the idea of gluing Styrofoam pieces to the board when everything else is made out of real world parts. If I were laying out the board for myself, I would look around for some modern day equivalent of the chips (similar size anyway) and space the points appropriately.

I love the project and check on it everyday. I’d love to be set for one. I’m just voicing why I’m on the fence.

Put me down for one please

I looked around and really can’t find anything at all like the white gold leaded parts on the board. I did find a way to get the gold leads and they look great. Just not sure what to do for the white body yet…

Anybody here know how to make simple white plastic/ceramic/whatever parts with some slots to hide the ends of gold leads (25 mil square posts, on 50 mil centers)? I think I would solder the posts into the circuit board and then slide or place the white body over the ends that need to be cut down. Probably at least 100 mil thick material.

For $10, I can add the 8 Large Capacitors, 22 Resistors (only two shown). 10 transistors, 4 diodes, 1 rectangular white cap and enough Red and White tubing to have your resistor leads covered and spare to cover the Sanyo black part’s leads when you make one.

Just guestimating, but a full solderable components kit with Nixie tubes, Red, White and Black tubing, the 144 gold posts, and the parts above would be about $60.

I have no experience with mechanical modeling, so you two should compare notes and see what you can come up with. I also don’t know what something like that would cost to design or produce, so it is hard to know if it is worth the effort…

Update my interest from one board to two kits please…

For $25? Hell yeah, I’m in!

Doug… You know im down for one
