Within any proper Ghostbusters team there is always a job description. Kinda like being in the military and being in a squad. (At least there should be, if we name everything else, why has this never been covered?)
The list of job titles are as follows-
Scanner- Use of the PKE, Gigameter and other search devices. (Egon’s position)
Chaser- Carries less equipment for better mobility, normally only the Proton Pack (Peter’s position)
In the context of the first movie it doesn’t really make good sense. As we know Ray and Winston go out alone and do the Fort bust, although it wasn’t included in the final cut we see several scenes relative to this. I would imagine they would all be semi qualified to fulfill any of those positions.
when someone else catches the ghost in the proton beam it’s your job to trap 'em or help support em till the ghost is trapped and i think egon uses the pke meter cause i imagine in the beginning only him and ray could read it, remember winston doesn’t have a specialty he was hired for extra help so he wouldn’t even know how to use it ad venkman never seems to want to do any work unless he has to.
