Well guys and gals, this will be my first build thread post. i haven’t done a ghostbusters costume in a long time, i came on this site to gather all the info all over again and my, have things changed.

i had to get back into the swing of things, there were some new terms, and ALLOT of new VERY talented people out. i felt alittle overwhelmed at first, i started asking all the newbie questions, and spent late nights up on my phone looking threw old threads, it actually really helped me out more than you believe. not only was i learning allot, but it also gave me something to look forward too rather then sit in the hotel bar with the rest of the work crew…

So it seemed every night this guy PssdffJay was updating his proton pack build, so i got to read that. and i asked a few questions on there and he answered them right away. he was a very helpful guy, i then ventured into the uniform section and sure enough the same guy PssdffJay, had another detailed thread in there.

so i messaged him a few questions and he has totally taken me under his wing. he’s run down all the new terms, and short cuts, and what to read. and the pros and cons to items. i tell you, he has not only saved me allot of money, but also allot of time!

i told him how i want my uniform to look old, like a washed up 30yr old ghost buster. and he told me.. “you need the joeluna patch”

he schooled me on the patch, and sugguested i throw up a flag in the wanted section, it seems like it took 20 minutes and BAM!! i had a Luna patch on the way!! (thanks spark!!)

so about a month ago, i figured i was going to try and build a uniform so i can go to the re release on the 29th in it. so i started asking Jay what to do first. He walked me threw getting a flight suit, boots, belt gizmo, everything…

then i hit a few road bumps, seems the GB store was out of a few things… thats when he told me he had extra stuff, and already had a box ready for me and all he needed was my address!!** thats right**!! Jay totally hooked me up, and is a complete life saver! he sent me a extra belt he had, extra elbow pads, and surprised me with a spengler pin!! This guy is a great addition to this community, we have never even met and he helped me out not even thinking twice about it!

its late now, but tomorrow im gonna give my elbow pads a few coats of charcoal grey (the darker one, ironically i have medium grey sitting on my shelf that i used to paint my gauge pod in my truck!) but want the darker color

so what do u think jay, do i cut my elbow pads first? then paint? and in the picture below i rolled the right pad inside its self to judge if its short enough.

do u think this is movie accurate?

Nice find on the impromptu PKE holster!

For the elbow pads, I cut mine first and stretched them over protein powder containers, because I had 2 the same shape, and then sprayed them. If you stretch them over something before painting, you’ll abound having the white come through that didn’t get painted. Don’t let them dry stretched out too much or they’ll be harder to shrink back. I had to wet them and dry them to get mine to shrink up again.

Some people have used a spray on the cut edges to stop fraying. Can’t think of what it’s called. I didn’t, but I cut along one side of a thread.

If these are temporary and you’re going to get the ones on the new run, folding over is good. Phil’s look great and he folded. I can’t remember if he glued them. I’m sure he’ll comment here on it. Just make sure it’s not too tight on your arms folded over, no need to cut off the circulation.

That black paint pen does wonders on the details lines. Don’t count the medium grey out yet. Compare the shots of mine with the charcoal and lighter grey on the arms compared to Phil’s which I think is just the lighter grey. Mine look like Venkman’s when he meets Peck. They’re pretty dark in some photos.

Yep, mine are folded and hot glued… I was initially worried the hot glue wouldn’t work right on the stretchy fabric, but it worked great! Been contemplating on cutting them to get that authentic “frayed” look, but I love how neat and clean they looked, and most importantly, I love the fit!

As for the paint, I used an entire can of Charcoal Gray Fabric Spray Paint (you can find it in about any auto shop)… It’s a pretty dark gray, but you can still see the black paint marker outline and notice the contrast between the two…

Phil, you used the charcoal? My mistake. Yours look lighter than mine, thought you went with the light grey.

(Before I sewed on my non accurate leather patch or black line details.)

I should have cut mine lower down though. I wonder if my attempt at dyeing had anything to do with the colour, or that I did everything with the light grey and then a top coat of charcoal grey on just the pad.

Great to see you starting a uniform. Looks like you have a good start!

If you have issues with the cut edges of the pads unraveling, pick up a bottle of “Dritz Fray Check” at a fabric store.

Looking forward to seeing your progress here.

thanks everyone! im gonna go tomorrow to joanne fabrics, see if i can get the “Dritz Fray Check” and see what they have for elastic cloth for the center pieces

jay my uniform did come in, its alittle baggy though. i think i need to shrink it, i have allot of extra in the arms and legs

i do have a question though, how are u guys removing the flap on the left arm? i see there is 2 rows of stitching there… do you guys just cut it even or do u actually unstitch it and re sew it back?

i was just curious how you guys would go about shrinking it? do u think it would shrink too much if i washed in warm water and then dried on delicate?

For the Tru-Specs, a hot water wash and dry it in the dryer on High was all I needed to shrink it… 3 cycles got mine to just the right size…

As for the flap on the sleeve, I left mine on there… LOL! =P

It’s a nomex. I don’t think it’ll shrink. You could try a wash on hot. It was that used one I pointed you to wasn’t it? If nomex does shrink, it might not if it didn’t from the original owner.

Are you wearing clothes under? I have a meeting. I’ll post more thoughts tonight.

Oh, the flap. I just cut it off.

If it fits your gut, I would not attempt to shrink it. You have extra in the arms & legs because you got a L(ong). Now you know you are a R(egular). Even if it did shrink, the arms & legs would never shrink enough and the gut area would be too tight. Personally, I think it looks fine. When you’re suited up, you will appreciate the extra room.

That flight suit fits you really well. Looking great and your joeluna patch is awesome - just like the film. Nice find!

phil your elbow pads look like how i rolled mine, i feel more comfortable now

i did sign up for the second run of grey elbow pads, but its fun working on your own

im hoping to paint them tomorrow, i ran into some extra errands today and been working real late, saturday morning im doing a real push, see if i can catch up

actually jay come the weekend i couldnt find that suit!! and i wanted it because im going for a old look and picking one up used i figured would have some weathering to it already

i was only wearing a t-shirt and boxer shorts, my room mates (parents lol) have the a/c going today too, and boy was it hot in there!

i dont remember my old suit getting this hot, somewhere in the attic my mom has my original suit ( that i put together when i was 17. im gonna dig it out and compare my old one to this one)

again i am trying to do this a secret from my family and girlfriend so i cant take selfies… i’m gonna have to ask one of them tomorrow to take some full pictures so u guys can judge me again

with the elbow pads on it looks kinda like jays arms, im feeling more comfortable now seeing jay and phils pics

thanks buddy, now that my uniform stuff has come in and im putting it together ive gotten the itch real bad. i have been collecting pack parts, but not going to use them any time soon so now that i can actually craft something it feels excellent!!

jay turned me on to the luna patch, once he showed me the differences i KNEW i had to have one. but being such a newbie and the patch being older i figured i was outa luck… but sure enough spark came to my rescue!

i think the patch is my favorite part of my uniform, second is the spongeface gizmo, this sucker is too cool!!

I’m only 5’11" and I have a long suit too. Not sure if it makes a difference in the body, but I tell myself it gives me more room in the crotchal area. I tuck my pants it and the sleeves with the velcro feel right. I think this is a good fit. If you got room to move around, crouch down, sit down and have it be comfortable and not too tight, it’s probably the right fit. Have you tried with boots yet?

im feeling allot of relief. i never notice how MC Hammer baggy the suit was until i put it on. i felt too puffy, but now looking at some ref pictures, sure enough they were really baggy, look how thin ramis is, and how baggy his legs are

my problem is i have been using this photo for reference allot

murry must have a very small build because his arms arent baggy, but i think i can pull that off with the elbow pads on. I seriously am jumping the gun too quick, im gonna run it threw the wash acouple times tomorrow with fabric softener to see if i can weather it up, run some sand paper on the zippers. maybe throw it on and roll around on the concrete around the swimming pool, its textured cement see if that will break it in. thats my trick to weathering light saber grips, chuck them on the cement!! LOL

as for the boots jay, this is my biggest fear, i ordered them almost 3 weeks ago and still no sign yet…

i ordered them for that place Vinc suggested. i hope they show up soon. i think im going to tuck them in, i do how ever like the venkman style

I actually have the GBFans elbow pads, but I seem to prefer wearing my own, for some reason… I feel that they fit better, I guess…

I ordered my 995’s from them and shipping was a bit slow, so I emailed them requesting a tracking number, which they were happy to provide. Of course, they showed up the next day :whatever:
