do you guys cut the button flap off? i havent found a good picture yet in my reference folders

isnt it funny i was complaining last night and they showed up today! lol i wonder if that will work with my Gbfans order.. “man i only ordered them last week, wonder when thats gonna come in..” fingers crossed!!

I think that’s their business model. Stress people out on delivery and then deliver next day!

You’re going to need longer laces. I picked up 2 sets of 48", cut them and tied together in the middle. You just need to figure out the length. Some people use black para cord.

My boots didn’t have the zipper. Ive seen one person who cut the flap but I can remember who.

Get yourself a good insole and some mink oil. My boots are the most comfortable footwear I have. I debate sometimes just wearing them out of the house in regular clothes.

believe it or not but i do have mink oil which i use on my work boots to keep them water tight. right now jay im looking up old boot threads, it does seem to be that the originals didnt have the zipper flap

thats ernies original boots… his zippers are bronze.. i wonder if those boots are from GB2 because if u look at this photo

seems like the zippers are bright silver, possibly stainless, i would think they were stainless being a military boot, and less pron to rust and break

^THIS^ - Well said, Jay!

I made the following customzations to my 995’s…

  • Removed built-in insole

  • Installed custom insole

  • Cut off Zipper flap

  • Painted snap buttons black

  • Painted zipper silver

  • Gave 'em the mink oil treatment

You can check it out my boot stuff here…

I’ve worn the boots twice and they were very comfortable. No blisters or anything.

Ah ha! See I did see that recently, it was in GohstTarp’s build!

And I probably wasn’t clear, the Carolina boots didn’t have the flap, just you showed in the photos. I think most people leave them on their 995’s but if you go that extra little step and cut the flap and paint zippers and snaps, it’ll look great!

do u believe i just came back here to post this thread

real nice tricks ya got there! even though i use mink oil ( and its a oil in a tube not the paste) i dont know exactly if thats what i want to do. let me explain, when i get my work boots (redwings) the sales man ive been going to my whole life ( we go twice a year for boots) always sells me the oil at the same time telling me i need to put this on once a month to keep it water tight… if this is true i have no idea

does the mink oil paste keep the boots looking new? if so thats something i dont want to do, i want to beat the hell out of these boots and make them look old and heavily used like my work boots

![image](http://www.gbfans.com/images/pb/lightningdan/Mobile Uploads_IMG_1857600x450.jpg)

if the mink oil (paste) preserves the shine i dont want that either, i was wondering if i even used deglosser to dull the shine down?

crap i forgot about the buttons now on the boot… with out u telling me i didnt notice them on GohstTarps boots, i think im gonna go with GohstTarp’s mods

now having to paint the black buttons and knowing there there is going to erk me! LOL time to jump in! im gonna go hit the walmart up the street from me see if they have the silver sharpie like he suggested

Great minds think alike.

AFAIK, the mink oil is for softening the leather and water-proofing only.

I wore the boots for a few hours and found out where they were rubbing and needed softening and then using an (old) toothbrush, I put mink oil on those spots. I think it was specifically on the outside where my baby toe would be and then where it flexes at the heel. Left it for 24 hours. Then the next day, I slathered everything else in a thin layer of mink oil and left it again for another 12 or 24 ish hours. Then I wiped it all off. nice a soft and flexible. I also wore my boots anytime I was at home to help them form to my foot, you don’t want to be breaking them in on your first day out in uniform, that would not be fun.

And my mink oil is the kind in a round tin.

hey jay guess what!? the Nomex shrinks!!!

i admit, this is the first time i ever took a selfie! did i even spell that right?! what i did was washed it in hot water, then dried immeditatly after the wash on heavy duty,HIGH for 50 minutes

pulled it out, tried it on and then did it again same extra thing, there was maybe 5 minutes from it coming out the dryer and then being thrown back into the wash

the thing shrunk everywhere. the arms feel much better, look how less baggy they are with out the elbow pads on. i cant believe it shrunk this much. im not complaining its exactly where i want it now

even the legs shrunk! again though i like this fit much better.

now onto the boots…

i figured i’d wear them out tonight, i wear harely boots, my work boots, my shop boots (for welding) im always in boots… these have to be the most uncomfortable boot i ever wore! LOL

jay i talked to my dad tonight hes got mink oil in a can, and when i asked him about it in the bottle/tube he said he always used the oil in the can and doesnt know what the hell im talking about having oil in a tube… lol i dont know why but the last oil my buddy gave me was in a tube/bottle like so

anyway, i wore them tonight and boy oh boy do they need loosing up. so im going to follow ur instructions jay and see how long it takes before they break in

That’s weird looking mink oil. It actually looks like oil. Mine is a white paste if you could call it a paste.

I also wear high socks in the boots. They’re actually a pair of my snowboarding socks. I have very muscular calves and I hate having them rub.

As soon as you break them in, you’ll love them. Mine are super comfortable.

Good to know about the shrinkage. (That sounds bad…). I don’t want mine to shrink, but that’s a good tip to know. The fabric softener will help take away some of the sheen in the fabric too if you didn’t already use it. It looks like a good fit!

A tip for the laces I learned from an army guy was have longer laces so that when you do the bow, tie a little knot at the end by the aglet, then pull the loop as big as you can and the knot will stop when it hits the knot from the bow. Then you can tuck the loops in the sides of the boot. You would then blouse the legs but we tuck them. It makes the boots look nice and tidy and you don’t have laces flopping around when you walk. Does that make sense? I can take some photos if it doesn’t.

Somebody didn’t miss leg day  lol

I think I understand. Did the gb crew tuck their laces in?

I can’t quite tell. From what I can see, or not see rather, are big loopy laces hanging out. Either there just isn’t much of the laces left after they are tied, or the are tucked. Or, its such a thin its not translating to the images very well.

I did the whole paracord thing, so it’s just the right length to throw a square knot on and not have it look messy… my pant legs are insanely long (the only part that didn’t shrink the way I wanted it to), so I have to fold it like 6 inches up and tuck them in really good… Hopefully, I will have the money next Halloween (2015 or 2016) to have a custom made G&B flightsuit, and I can wear it Venkman style if I wanted to, or just blouse them up easily and not worry about it being too long…

jay, phil do u guys have pics of your boots with the knots? and different cords? where can i get the cords?

I’ll take some photos of how I do mine tonight for you. Mine were just 2 laces tied together to make it the length I wanted.

Paracord you can find online, probably Amazon, or I have seen it in Army Surplus store, but you pay a premium in there.

Edit: Of course its on Amazon, you can find everything on Amazon. http://www.amazon.com/s?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=black+paracord&rh=i%3Aaps%2Ck%3Ablack+paracord&tag=gbfans-discourse-20
