I cringe when I read Internet geek sites like AVclub or badassdigest or AICN when they mention Dan Aykroyd. Everyone thinks he is crazy for his beliefs and desperate after years of his constant GB3 promises/false starts. They have a patronizing/condescending tone when GB news comes from the latest crystal skull vodka tour/promo junket. Danny really is the heart of the Ghostbusters. So I feel terrible that he still believes a GB3 could be made post reboot. Sony doesnt care about Aykroyd. They have strung him along for years while waiting for Murray. The comments section on AVCLUB is hard to read. They are ruthless. I almost want to say “give the guy a break”. He has said numerous times it’s all just for fun. He doesn’t truly believe in all this shit. He does believe in the possibility of ghosts and likes to tell ghost stories but he makes clear these things are fun to discuss & wonder about. His dad and grand father were really into the paranormal so he got close to them by playing the part. It’s all just theatrics and a bit of pseudo science. I watched an interview with him where he mentions it’s all just good fun. He has never experienced paranormal activity(minus the mass sponge migration) and says he chooses to take what people say they’ve seen as circumstantial evidence, but evidence none the less. I almost think he should wear a personal footnote or fine print t-shirt that reads “I am not relating first hand encounters. This is all just what others have experienced”.
I think he should wear a shirt that says “F*** Bill Murray!!!” or something like “Hey I can believe what I want, you love Tom Cruise and his crazy beliefs”.
There will never be a Ghostbusters as loved as the first one(2 was ok) so let Sony and the AVNerds talk all the shit they want, and bow to the feet of their “not as good as he once was” icon Murray and shove this excuse for a reboot right down their cake holes.
Disclaimer: these are my views and if you have problems with them please feel free to be free to state your opinion. Bill Murray lost his iconic status to me after Groundhogs Day. 22 years ago.
Bill has been our best protection against a horrible GB3 for years.
Most fans know this, but the rights of GB are split between Sony, Dan, Harold (not sure what happened after his death, if they reverted to Sony or became a part of the estate) Bill and Ivan…ALL of them have to sign off before a sequel is made.
All Bill ever wanted was a script as good as the first one. He (by his own admission) finally got that with Ghostbusters the Video Game, which really is the perfect 3rd installment.
Am I excited for a reboot? No.
But I’d rather there be a useless reboot that is easily forgotten (Like Nightmare on Elm Street or Friday the 13th) than a sequel that actually screws up the continuity of the real canon (I.E. all sequels after Aliens, or the Star Wars Prequels)
I and others have posted the timeline elsewhere, but Dan has been promising a GB3 in interviews since at least 1993…it’s a part of his illness…I mean he IS mentally challenged.
If the man himself says he has Aspergers he probably at least has that…He’s not only talked at length about GB3 but has promised various franchises including mine parts in the new film to the point of taking contact info and then later emailing to make sure the email was correct!..a film that will probably never be made.
At a certain point, Dan should have realized that a GB3 was not going to happen. All his efforts and any support he could rally from those with influence should have been put into a television show instead. Not live action, the budget and logistics would require a station the likes of HBO however all they make are shows focused on sex and violence these days. They did handle Spawn nicely though.
An animated show would solve all those problems. They could have the likenesses, as many of the movie actors as they could get, keep the period in the early 90’s and do ANYTHING they wanted including pay tribute to certain fan favorite plots from RGB and so forth. I imagine it would be not unlike what IDW accomplished.
THIS idea is still doable, perhaps Hudson could actually voice his own damn character this time! The Video Game was proof Dan and Harold still had their creative writing chops and everyone else involved gave a great cinematic performance within the interactive medium.
If and when this lame reboot happens, I hope it does go the route of other great movies rebooted into cheap, popcorn munching facsimiles. Still, this franchise deserves better.
Dude. Did you just call someone with aspergers mentally challenged? Listen to his recent Howard Stern interview & get a clue before dismissing the guy. Illness? People ask him about GB3. He has been very clear there is no movie until they get the greenlit & production number. Besides that it’s nice that he answers fans questions. The guy was nice enough to offer you something, even going so far as to email, and you question his mental state? I don’t even know what to say. Total lack of respect for a comedic genius who thinks a little differently than you or I. Listen to that Howard Stern interview. Does that sound like a mentally ill person? Why would you say that?
I really hate when the GB1 script gets propped up as a gold standard. It’ s not a great script. Reitman took a decent script, great actors, & turned it into something more than what was on the page. Could you imagine if the original ending with the bums would have ended the film? Or the terrible pacing problems in the second act? Imagine if the ghostbusting gear was as described in the script? Like swat teams with rods that pop out of their sleeves? Gozer as a business man?
You wrote this on another thread. What’s your problem? I so desperately want this to be a failed attempt at sarcasm on your part. Please don’t sully the beautiful privilege we have in calling ourselves ghostbusters fans by resorting to this kind of border line bigotry. Then you crossed the border.
Wow I understand that he’s been cheerleading a delusion for over 20 years, but I think questioning his mental state like that is just coming off as being a complete ■■■■■■■.
