Lash's Tainted Love Mk. IIZ Build-FINISHED 20th November

Yeah, it’s another one of these. XD I figure there really aren’t enough around yet and I really like the smaller design and convenience of the arm-mounting, so I decided to build one. This one is actually take two, as the first one didn’t turn out as well as I’d have liked. This one is actually a lot better, even though it isn’t anything like perfect. It works for me, at least. This one’s sort of a collaboration between me and Ketchum, with me doing most of the work and him helping out with some parts, advice and loads of reference photos to help me with certain bits. For this build, I used some things either he or I already had, along with one ot two found items, some bits from the dollar store, and a number of knobs, switches and other bits from an online electronics parts store.

I started with the thrower for the pack, since I don’t actually like the thrower on the comic pack. The pack itself is great, but the thrower…not so much (IMO, of course). I decided that since the Mk.IIZ is a smaller version of the original, the thrower I wanted was going to be exactly the same thing, a smaller version of the original. I looked at schematics and photos and figured out exactly what I could eliminate or move around on the gun without significantly affecting the look or removing too many bits and then started construction.

My base materials were a cardboard doll box (don’t ask) and a cookie tin for the cyclotron. It’s actually a touch on the small side for the TL pack, but it seems like it’ll work well anyway, I think.

The first thing I did in actually constructing the thrower was to get the parts sketched out and then cut, and the thrower body mocked up. It’s constructed in nine pieces, since the cardboard I’m using is fairly stiff and I can’t really bend it without breaking it. Once I got it all taped together, I marked out the approximate locations of various knobs and switches and other bits to be placed.

Once I got that done, I could start putting it together properly. I got all my switches and knobs in, as well as an LED kit to put in place of the bar graph on the thrower. (The LED kit didn’t end up working out, as I can’t find my soldering iron at the moment and the wire glue I got doesn’t work for shit.) I got it put together and got most of the knobs, switches and other bits installed relatively quickly after that, but ended up having to install some parts I originally forgot to order after it was mostly together.

This is what I’m using for the Clippard valve on the thrower. I’ve got another one for the pack. They’re old fluorescent starters with the prongs cut off and nuts glued on, then given a coat of silver paint.

After I got the thrower mostly assembled (at this point it still needed a couple of parts added, but I had to wait until I got those in, as I’d forgotten to order them along with the other parts I’d already bought), I decided to address the problem of the handle/trigger mechanism. As I said, I wanted somethig very like the comic book trigger mech, which meant a long arm with a handgrip and the trigger button on the end. For this, I went with the plastic tube that had been inside the “Sound Tube”/groan tube (one of those deeply annoying tubes that makes a sort of whining/groaning sound when you flip it over), as it was the perfect circumference to fit the button I’d gotten for the trigger and there was more than enough of it for my purpose. I got it measured out to the right length for the grip/trigger part and cut it off, then melted the longer bit I had left to the grip part, cut off the excess and used that to add a shorter length to the end, which is the part that actually went into the body of the thrower. I covered over the open ends that were left and then gave it a bit of hot glue welding and a coat of black spray paint.

I now have it almost finished, but do not yet have photos of it in the state it’s now in. I’ve added a few bits since these photos were taken, so I’ll try to get some shots of the nearly-finished (just in need of labels) thrower in the next few days.

Next up: The pack itself. This is actually proving less hassle than the thrower for me.

The pack itself is also made of the same cardboard box, along with the cookie tin. Here’s the basic layout (more or less) and the main bits that I’m using to make it:

This is the light that’s going in the cyclotron. I was originally using one with white LEDs, but found that the orange ones look better. This was, believe it or not, ten cents at a dollar store (I love post holiday sales :D)

The tape is actually holding the lights in pretty well, and since they’re right up against the inside of the can and the plastic I used for the lenses, the’re not going anywhere.

That red plastic is called Jolite and comes in small sheets like this. ( Think they’re maybe 4x6 inches or so.)

(I know it doesn’t have the blue panel/lights in it like the full scale packs, but I was going partly by the sketches (which don’t have it either)).

The two bigger round bits are going to be silver, the others are staying white.

Right now, I’ve got the cyclotron attached to the motherboard and all of the straps on. At the moment, what’s left to do is adding wires and some other bits and pieces and then getting all the labels where they need to go on this thing and I’m done, pretty much, except for possible touch-ups of paint and maybe a tiny bit of weathering if I can make it look half-decent.

Update! Got a bit more done today. I constructed the mini ion arm, whihc is going on the bottom of the pack below the powercell. That will be set in place onceI get the red/black stripes painted on the bottom part of the pack. I also reworked my power cell, as I realised that it was going to be too big to have on the pack as it awas and still be able to mount the ion arm. I ended up hacking off about an inch of it, and it honestly looks loads better than it did before. It seems a bit more in scale now. While I was working on it, I added the other piece that needed to go on the side.

Here’s the ion arm and the crank gen/booster pieces (I just did those as one piece since they’d have got stacked together anyway). The rod is the wrong colour, but hey, I don’t happen to have brass paint at the moment and can always repaint it later.

Power cell glued in place on the pack. The tape’s there to hold it down while the glue’s drying, as the side of the power cell that goes against the motherboard is a little uneven.

Crank gen/booster also in place. I almost forgot to mention, I decided to nix the two slanted pieces that came down from the upper part of the pack. They left me without enough room to mount everything properly after finishing the power cell and were pretty much simply getting bent up and otherwise in the way. Getting rid of them also gave me room to shift things around a little for a better fit.

I also got a video of how the light in the cylotron works, in case anyone is interested. It’s not perfect, of course, but it definitely works.

Getting close to finished here. Next up is to get things touched up, paint the stripes and install the ion arm, then get my ribbon cable and various wires installed, as well as anything else I might still need to add (like the valve on the pack, which will go on after I stick a label on it). Oh, and labels, can’t forget those. I just need to figure out how far I have to scale them down.

I finished the pack today. The rest of the work happened between last night and today, since some bits needed to be left alone longer than others, as they needed more time for the glue to dry. (By the way, all labels are regular pack labels at either 100% (thrower) or 50% (pack) These last few photos show the finished pack and thrower and a couple of shots of how it actually looks on. Don’t mind how low it seems to sit, we had the straps a little loose for these.

I’m thinking of chopping off a few inches of hose because it turned out to be a little long, but other than that, it’s done.

SInce I forgot to mention it (I think) the way the straps are attached on this is: three on the pack, one at just about armpit level when it’s strapped on properly, one at mid biceps, and one jsut above the elbow, as well as a strap at jsut about shoulder level that goes across the chest to help anchor it. (More or less exactly what you see in the comic). The thrower has two straps at wrist and mid-forearm.

I like it a lot. I think you nailed the “miniatured version of the real thing” really well. I like your version more that the one in the comic. :wink:

On a personal note, that pic of you with the pack kicks ass. You look like Starbuck (and yes, that’s a good thing :D)

i like that you used the original gun box as the gun, the goofy shaped one in the comics is goofy.

It really is awesome in person. Its light too. So after cons and franchise stuff her back wont be dead.
