My first real pack build

I can’t speak for pwright on his shell but every spot on my shell that involves any kind of drilling or mounting is super thick and without air pockets. I think the most thin spots were for the straights and the ribbon cable hole area. Chris made these things beefy.

Grimmy is right - this shell is thick. While I will reserve final judgement on placement of the barbs in the injector block (So that’s what you call it  until after I actually install the tubing, I think it will be fine. I haven’t run into any air bubbles anywhere in the shell yet and am going to have to grind down the gun mount block so I can install the backplate of the V hook since the shell is so thick. I’ll try to snap a picture of the backside of the injector block to show what it looks like with the barbs installed.

Bish - thanks for your compliment on the milliput repair. I stole the idea from you and it has worked out great so far. I plan to also do a “milliput weld” between the ion arm and booster tube. As for the interior - I don’t think I’ll be chroming or golding it. Thinking of going with black with yellow in the cyclotron like Nick’s awesome Volguus replica.

Quick update. Made some more progress yesterday and it’s really starting to look like a pack now.

HGA drilled and tapped for the Clippard, elbow, and 4 1/4 20 1/2" SHCS. I installed this with 1 screw in the middle but may add a second screw so it won’t rotate on me.

Installed the ion arm with 3 screws. It’s rock solid. I’m still waiting on some resistors I found on evil bay and a cap.

I went ahead and dry fit the booster tube that I currently have. I was thinking of getting an aluminum replacement for this part but the pack is already pretty hefty and the tube from crix doesn’t look to bad. I may just keep it.

Also, drilled a 1/2" hole for the ribbon cable. I need to get a larger step bit as 1/2" was the biggest size on mine and this hole is still too small.

This was around the time it hit me!! Surreal but amazing feeling isn’t it?!? Your build is going really well mate. Looking forward to more.

Thanks! I’ve got everything else I need to finish the pack ordered but it won’t be in hand until next week. Until then I’m going to work on installing the PPD and drilling the 2 holes for the straights. I also plan to paint everything but the ion arm. Going to wait until all the pieces are dry fit before I spray it. I’m a little intimated by the electronics so I figured I would finish up the pack first and then work on lights and sound.

Sounds like you’ve got your plan all sorted. Good on ya. What electronics are you using?

You’re pretty lucky about the parts. I’ve been waiting on most of my parts for a while lol.

And this pack is looking fantastic!

I’m using crix’s light and sound kit.

Grimmy - I kind of waited to start until I had most of the major parts. I also made sure to order parts that were already in stock as I know myself and knew that once I started building, I would not want to stop. With the gbfans shop currently closed, I did end up ordering some of the parts from ebay (SMC parts, resistors, ribbon clamp, lenses). Honestly, the real reason I’m considering using the booster tube from crix set is that I don’t want to wait for an aluminum one. When I have a little more time, I will list everyone I’ve purchased from as everyone has been great

I’m glad you did. I had all of the small items for drilling so that took a good chunk of the work out over the past few months. Just waiting on my aluminum parts now. Those should go on quick ^^.

Have you said (I didn’t see) whom you are getting your thrower from at this point? EDIT!!! Nevermind. I’ll wait until you get it in lol.

Anyway, I’ll continue watching your build.

Nice work and good job thinking ahead for potential issues. I proceeded the same way with a single bolt… and then after it kept turning I added a second bolt. Doh!

Thanks Bish. My wife has been ill so I haven’t gotten any further but I am expecting the rest of my parts to arrive in the next 3-4 days so I should have a nice update next week.

Grimmy GB - for now I will just be using my matty thrower. I plan to eventually build a throwing chicken kit and using the matty wand on my foam pack that is going to be passed down to my brother after I revise it to be a bit more accurate. I just need to hold off on purchasing it because I know once I get the kit in hand, I will want to build it

Hey. I got a pchrisbish1 shell with a wiz bumper. Was wondering where you are lining up your bumper on the shell. The left side of the bumper fits directly on the panel at 9 o’clock but the right of the bumper fits between the first and seconds panel on the right.

We are going for level bumpers right?

Csullivan1980 - I’ll try to answer your question but I’m not 100% happy with mine. I wish I had waited until I had the shock mount. It’s hard to get the bumper straight in all 3 planes. I would find the center point for the shock mount and drill the shell and bumper, then connect them in the middle with a bolt so you can rotate the bumper and it will stay centered. Mount the left side (ion arm side) with one screw first. I drilled the lower bumper hole first and then held it in place while drilling the shell. Tap them both and attach with 1 SHCS. Now you have two anchor points. Then, go to the right side (gun mount side) and get it level with respect to the height from the top of the shell. I think Grimmy posted the gap was 3/16" but I just eyeballed it until straight. Drill the bumper first and then while holding it in place, drill through the bumper hole into the shell. Then tap and attach with a SHCS. Finally, drill the second hole on each side.

To answer your question, one set of holes ended up in a gap between the cosmetic plates and the other ended up within a cosmetic plate. It’s straight but I think my bumper ended up a little too high. Oh well.

By the way, the pictures you posted look about right for the bumper position. Hope my explanation helped.

It did. Thanks for the reply.

I just put the bumper on a flat surface and, using Stefan’s measurements, checked the heights. The bumper will be different from each maker.

As far as the alignment, it’s either by eye or math. Maybe both lol.

Grimmy’s bumper looked better than mine so definitely check out his build thread.

Been a great building weekend. I got the MOBO brackets attached and then attached the MOBO to my LC-2 frame. Sorry for the blurry second pic.

Attached ribbon cable clamp and legris straights.

Finally, attached shell to MOBO and frame and worked on my ribbon cable.

Getting close to a long stopping point. After I get the rest of the pieces dry fitted, I will be starting to work on electronics. My plan is to paint in the spring as I’m afraid the paint job will turn out poorly if I try to just spray it in my garage since the garage isn’t heated.

Your bumper is on the wrong way

Excellent progress

Hah! That’s what I get for throwing it back on quickly for a pick.

Fixed it for us Grimmy.
