My GB2 Amalgamated pack aka the wife's pack.

I’m building a second pack for my wife to wear on Halloween (though my friend will probably end up wearing it most of the time).

I decided to go the GB2 route this time, though I’m taking a slightly different approach; I’m sort of picking and choosing the cool details I like from the GB2 hero, semi-hero and PH packs. Not really duplicating any one pack.

This should be fun.

Got all the parts…notables include Nicks bumper, booster frame and battery plate/cup set. I also picked up the Makita batteries and had the aluminum brackett for the plate machined by RJ. Got a ion cap and real copper rod from TilSon and a real deal p-clamp from Filandrius.

I took on all the aluminum parts this time from Vince’s metal shopping list. Aluminum HGA, filler and beam line and injector tubes. Well, almost all the aluminum. Vince sent me a vacuum line free of charge. Graci.

Going with the Alkaline shell I bought back in January, I think. SOB was/is warped to hell. I took one full day off from work and sanded this thing from morning to midnight. It still isn’t perfect but it’s passable now.

I also sanded off the ■■■■■/■■■■■■/■■■■/eda disks and replaced them. I sanded down the cyclotron rings and replaced them with ones with the correct sized holes (coincidentally, these came with the lens kit I bought from Jupiter a while back).

I want the ribs under the crank box area gone but I just don’t have it in me to sand anymore on this anymore.

Nick will probably give me hell for painting this with a silver undercoat too but I like it! I know it’s not accurate. It’s ok to break the rules as long as you know them, right? we’ll go with that.

Trying to maximize comfort, I obtained a genuine LC-2 frame a while ago with the more comfy kidney pad.

This is the one that Bjorn may hate me for… He pointed out to me that the straps on some of the GB2 packs were padded LC-1 straps and not LC-2 straps. And voila; a couple of pristine LC-1 straps with the padding added on. Found just the right color of Cordura fabric on eBay.

I’m using Nick’s gun kit for this build. Just have to get the corners on my Namebrand heatsink curved. This one should go quick. Stay tuned.

Your off to a good start Brian I could already tell it’s going to make a mighty fine pack. The aluminum bracket for the Makita batteries is awesome. Good luck with the build.

Since you pointed out to me that the cyclotron rings are too big on the Alkaline, I can’t look at anything else on mine. Daaamn you!!!

This will be a great pack, I can feel it.

Oh and I’m jealous of your straps.

Thanks brother. You set the bar pretty high though; we’re all just gonna be playing catch up. If and when you get those GB1 ribbon cables, who’ll be able to touch your pack build? Epic.

Just the holes were too big. My BigI-Vince shell was making fun of them.

Hell, I’m jealous of the straps. My wife will be way more comfy than I will.

Any chance you could pad the bottom part of the straps as well? Would look cool.

I was gonna do that when I get around to doing the gb2 straps.

Well some of them weren’t padded all the way down…

And some were… you know how consistent they were :|. Originally, I was going for Ray’s pack…but plans changed and the pads stayed the same.

That’s for sure.

I remember when you mentioned this to me a few weeks ago. I’m just going to play ignorant and not even worry about it. As they say, ignorance is bliss!

just so you know, not all GB2 packs had modified LC-1 straps. some of them were modified LC-2’s, they can be viewed in various scenes in GB2.

i beg you not to modify those nice LC1s if youre not going for total accuracy to a specific pack. find yourself a pair of easily-gotten LC-2 pads and modify those instead

also, i know you said youre done with sanding, but you may want to take off the 2 fins that wrap around the right side of the crank gen where the HGA is attached. you might have some trouble placing the HGA accurately if theyre there.

Great info. I knew the LC-2 straps had to be used as well. Just hadn’t gotten the energy up to pop GB2 in the DVD player.

As far as the LC-1 straps go, they’ve already been modified, but I made sure it was done so that it could be undone. The pads will unstitch, if need be. Truth be told, I like the look of these padded more than the LC-2s, plus I may try to duplicate that lobby pack more accurately with a ahem different shell someday.

Crank generator fins, check. I sanded that for hours cussing like a sailor.

LC-2 padded straps are accurate too. Check :stuck_out_tongue:

Cussing like a sailor: part of every healthy Alkaline build.

Well, I only said SOME were LC-1s. I have a pair of LC-2s as well. I only realized that some had the LC-1s when Bjorn pointed it out.

I’m still cussing like a sailor at the size of the N-filter. Is this a pringles can or what?

The padded straps are very cool, great job.

Thanks man…they just need a metal thrower to go with them…hint…hint.

To build the thrower, I printed the project and paste to aluminum plate (2 mm thick), then I cut with Nibbler.

To paste parts i used superglue mixed with aluminum powder.. The end result is not 'very clean, but I’m improving slowly the details.

Cool. Build me one.

AHHH. What happened to those transfers. They aren’t from me.

Scratch built HGA.

I’m tool impaired, so I can’t emphasize enough how much of a bitch it was the cut aluminum plate into a circle with a hand grinder and a belt sander but I got there. And it’s all aluminum.

Used the HGA I got from Vince as reference for the welds, which I made from Apoxie sculpt. Grinded a fender washer down so it was thinner and applied the label.

Surprisingly, I thought the drilling and tapping for the bolts and elbows would be more difficult.

I’d do it gladly, but I would need cnc machine to cut aluminum.

The transfers in photos are the tests that I did last year, I tried transfers for inkjet printers, but they are very bad.

Yeah, those ink jet transfers don’t work too well. Glad you got yours…finally.

Anyway, I got this baby painted. I’m accelerating.

Smaller cyclotron holes FTW!

Thaaat’s better. At least now the pack won’t look like it’s been kicked in the nuts.
