New Proton Pack Plans Preview Based on Stefan's Plans

I started on modelling the GB1 pack in SolidWorks last week, this is what I have thus far. I have taken Stefan’s plans as a basis for the modelling but I have revised dimensions on some of the parts so that it all fits together more cleanly. In a number of instances I found missing dimensions in Stefan’s plans, so I scaled/rounded as best I could.

If there is any interest I will make the CAD model and detailed PDF drawings available when I am finished tweaking the pack.

Motherboard changes:

  • Dimensioned the “plate” areas such that they line up perfectly with the plate area on the sync generator

  • Modified tab area so it matches dimensions of the injector port mounted on top of a plate

  • Increased area where the power cell sits so fins don’t poke out around edges

  • Minor changes for better overall fit (couple of thou here and there)

Synch Generator changes:

  • Added 15th plate

  • As per Exoray’s discussion about washer size in the first page of this thread I have changed the inner diameter of the washers to 1-3/8"

Now I could use some help in the following areas shown in red in the first photo below:

  • Vendor and Part Numbers for electrical grommets used on injectors (need correct hole diameter here).

  • Is the resistor on the Ion Arm a Vishay Dale RH-25 or a Sage M25W (for a GB1 pack)

  • Diameter of fasteners on bumper. I am guessing the four hex bolts on the sides are 5/16" socket hex screws. What about the slotted screw attaching the “shock bumper” to the bumper? Stefan’s plans called for a 0.5" hole here, but I suspect this is supposed to be a 0.25" or 0.125" screw.

  • What kind of screws are used to attach the booster frame to the booster? I am guessing they are 0.25" diameter.

  • Any dimensions about the ribbon cable clamp, and also dimensions about the round bracket (loop) thing that attaches to the tower would also be appreciated.

I think this is the first topic on asking what accurate screws are on a proton pack

I’m interested seeing the plans when you are done. I think it’s time someone update Stephan’s plan.

I also suggest looking at Venkman71 (Sean Bishop) plans too since he actually get the real Proton Pack from the movie. I surprise that he did not see the extra plate.

another plate on the Synchronous generator did you say? best cut another to add to my master before i mould it

I found a number of dimensions are wierd and don’t match right on stefans plans

The ribs on the top edge of the Crank being one, they start 11.1mm in from the edges and each rib is 14.3mm and spaced 13.8mm apart

4 x ribs on the top edge 57.2mm

2 x edge spacement 22.2mm

3 x spaces between ribs 41.4mm

                                           ______

                                           120.8mm

but it gives the dimension for that edge of the gearbox as

119.1mm (with 3.2mm of incline at the base) and those two measurements don’t add up right

some places it would be nicer to have the direct measurements for a given length, rather than lengths around the area so you have to work the length out, or not following the same layout

an example of this is the Synchronous generator where the top circle has the diameter given on the plan view

where as the circle the Clippard goes on doesn’t its on the side view

however the last two points are minor problems and me just nit picking with layout as it annoyed me and wasted valuable construction time

I’m being too critical though as they are ■■■■■■ awesome plans, to improve on them is a great thing non the less

nice looking rendering but you might want to double check the position of your ion arm and HGA :slight_smile:

I see what you mean about the crank box, I suspect that Stefan didn’t space the left hand side of the fin the same as on the right side though since it has a tapered radius. It is possible that there is just some extra space on the left hand side.

As for putting in general lengths, I’ll be sure to put in some overall lengths even if they are reference dimensions, I agree they are more convenient.

Regarding the ion arm, are referring to the clippard L-fitting? I saw it was in different locations on Stefan’s plans and V71’s plans. Then I looked at the reference photos (Planet Hollywood, GB1??) and thought it should be placed on the wood block and not on the aluminum block.

Also same goes for the orientation of the HGA, are those fittings supposed to be angled at a 45, or just vertically like I have them? I was actually hoping someone would comment on that to confirm what is correct. I have seen different things in different photos.

And while we are on the GB1/GB2 topic, is that 50W resistor supposed to be a sage resistor or a vishay dale resistor?

Btw, nick-a-tron I took a quick look at your store. You have some nice resin parts there, what are the dimensions of the booster frame? If you have some stock I might pick up some parts… that booster frame looks like a pain.

He meant the actual HGA and Ion Arm parts, rather then the metal bits added to them. The Ion Arm appears to have floated a bit too much to the left.

It may also be shadow, but I can’t see the small box that’s attached to the left side of the Gun Mount, which then connects it to the Gear Box.

There should also be a slight chamfer on the base of the EDA, on the corner which has the tube attached to it (pictures can be provided for most of these observations).

Only other thing is that apparantly on Stefan’s plans, he had the tops of the Filler Plugs be placed at the same height, when in fact the tubes should both be the same height (with one sticking up further compared to the other).

Ion arm to far to the left? Well my EDA-PPD base is 5.625" wide where the 2" wide ion arm base connects. These dimensions all appear to match the motherboard just right (the EDA-PPD mates up with the edge of the motherboard and the ion arm is completely uncovered (see picture below). If this is not how it’s supposed to be please let me know… seems to match Stefan’s drawings though.

EDIT: Looked at some HD pictures… I now see that the ion arm is supposed to butt up with the motherboard. This means that either I misplaced the ion arm or the widths on Stefan’s plans have an extra 2" in width in this area. I am assuming that Stefan’s plans are correct and I am supposed to put the ion arm on top of the EDA-PPD base… would be good if someone could confirm that though… it seems really tall stacked together :expressionless:

Regarding the box between the gearbox and gun mount, do you mean the box with the green surface shown here? There is also the little black spacer between the aluminum slider for the gun mount and the gun mount fins if that is what you were referring too.

The filler tubes are supposed to be different heights when installed? Meaning they are both cut to the same length. Do you know which measurement is the correct height then?

The Ion Arm is supposed to be mounted on that corner of the EDA, like this:

As for the filler plug lengths, the correct length for both plugs is 3.875" ( the length of the plug with the clippard brass elbow on it).

It appears, from that illustration, that you’ve placed the Ion Arm on the side EDA “Ear” which sits above the Power Cel, when in fact the Ion Arm should be attached to the vertical face of that “Ear”. Illustrated here:

The green box was what I was referring to… I wasn’t sure if it was on there or not. :slight_smile:

From my understanding, based on a recent remark someone made about Stefan’s plan listing them incorrectly.

I don’t know the height myself, but if I had to suggest one, use the measurement of the longer of the two in his plans, and adjust accordingly with photos of the real packs in the reference section.

I believe Nick felt the HGA stuck out too far… but I’ll let him explain.

So where do we stand with the 15th plate then?

It was mention at another forum, not here. It’s hard to see it but someone with a good eye saw it.

No, it was talked about here too. There’s only one or two reference shots that show it as it is hidden under the ribbon cable, but it is there.

you can see it hiding back there behind the ribbon cable, you can just barely see one corner and one edge . . but it’s there.

So regarding the ion arm, in a GB1 pack is the clippard fitting supposed to be sitting on the aluminum block, or on further down on the base? I see in the above photo the clippard fitting is on the aluminum block…

I’m honestly not sure what size the grommet size is.

As for the clippard brass elbow on the ion arm assembly, that’s how it’s set up on the GB1 packs. In GB2, they are moved back farther.

Are you going to make the solidworks assembly file available when you are done?? I would love to take a look at it and it would make getting parts made a lot easier.

Yep, I’ll make it publicly available when it’s a little more done. Perhaps I’ll release the assembly file before I start on the new drawing set, I’m sure some more feedback will come back that way. I think the solid modeling should be done in the next 2 days or so.

On that note, does anyone know a good site to upload a 50 mb zip file so I can share this assembly?

Also issues I’ve addressed:

  • Fixed location of ion arm

  • Fixed orientation of HGA

  • Fixed filler tower heights

  • Added ribbon cable clamp (aluminum clamp and pipe clamp)

Things left to do:

  • Add in L-brackets locations

  • Add fasteners.

  • Add NPT fittings that attach to PPD-EPD below the cylinder with the angled cut. No idea what type of fittings those are though.
