A while back playskool2000 on the ASAP had a great mechanism for extending the tip using the green lever next to the trigger and some springs. Unfortunately the pics in the thread are gone and I’m waiting for playskool to respond to my PM to see if we can get his tutorial. In the meantime, I thought it would be good to start getting other peoples feedback on how we can accomplish this with TC gun kit. I have two of them on order and when I get them I want to incorporate that feature into it and I’m sure other would as well.
Ok well since I have a set of wand plans I’ve been tinkering around with the mechanism. What I need to know before I move any further forward is how far is the tip supposed to project out?
So is that like a one time launch thing? Like you can’t move the lever up and down to adjust. You only get to lift the lever and the tube slides out to max and you have to use your hand to push it back in and reset it?
Cool pic. With all that stuff in there,is there still room for a light kit?Mine looks really crowded with just the light kit never mind all that extra hardware added to it.
I just got a response from playskool2000, apparently the pics he had got dumped with an hard drive that crashed so it’s a good thing MB saved those. He did also share that his mechanism design has broken since then. I’m waiting to hear back where the failure was so we can improve the design. I’ve been working on a set of specs that I think will work nicely. I’m just tweaking things so they can with with TC’s kit.
Im very interested to see where you go with this, since I to have a TC kit that i’ve been wanting to modify to do this particular mechanism. Whatever you come up with please share
That mechanism would work much better if the lock arm was made at least half as long. Meaning less travel for the green lever. Oh and a torsion spring instead of a rubber band.
Ok, well it seems the major problem with playskools design is that the acrylic tube went all the way into the box. Acrylic being the fragile material it is, broke. So the design itself is good, it just needs to be in metal. I’m gonna hit the hardware store and see if there is an off the shelf solution. Getting things custom machined is not only a hastle but expensive. Of course if an off the shelf solution can’t be made, we’ll go with machined. I’m in the middle of specing something out I think will work.
Do you think TC will at some point incorporate this design innto his gun kit? I would definatley be willing to wait and pay a litttle extra for such those extra details!
Also the other issues is whether it will hold up when incorporating a Hyperdyne light kit. Not a lot of room in that gun box.
Anyway - This gun tip mechanism issue has plagued this site for years. Glad its finally making step in the right direction toward getting it working efficiently and consistently! Good job, fellas!.
I’m petty sure TC won’t be offering an extending tip mechanism. He posted those pictures to show how he would add that function to his specific kit, so people that have bought his kit can see how the best way to do it themselves.
I will agree that there won’t be a lot of room in the gun with this in there BUT my very first gun I built did have this mechanism in it along with a Hyperdyne labs light kit in it. And it was the older hyperdyne light kit that had bargraph still mounted onto the circuit board. It was tight but I was able to get it all in there.
Remember that you don’t need the entire circumference of the tube for the lock mechanism. Just half of the tube (even less would be better) is enough to work the idea.
