There’s no good reason my brain should be this engaged after all the green beer consumed last night but here I am…awake and pondering life’s biggest questions.
In the spirit of healthy camaraderie and discussion… In your personal opinion, what do you think is the “perfect pack”?
I know the following examples are kinda “apples to oranges” comparisons but they are all Proton Packs…albeit the last one can be debated…lol
All credit to the original owners/posters of the following pics…of, course…
The Phoenix Pack is a fantastic Pack, but if we’re going for a “perfect” Pack, something that replicates what was seen on screen, then it’s the one in the OMNI recreation.
I wouldn’t call the one on the bottom the worst, it has many recognizable traits and shapes of a proton pack, and was probably built on a 0 budget for a single halloween use. Not the best but I’ve seen worse. But to be on topic of those 3 the omni one is “best” because it most closely resembles what was seen on screen, but if you look at sheer cool factor then the phoenix pack wins
Good question…if we turn this topic 180…what is the worst? Do you reward points for hot gluing stuff to backpack and paining it black? Is putting forth minimal effort better?
Idealized “screen accurate”. That would be a shell that isn’t wonky and covered with gross brush stroke textures. It takes skill to replicate all those blemishes, but it just isn’t for me. We aren’t intended to see those things.
Not putting out anyone who has commissioned a pack. I might still one day, depends on how my build actually goes.
But I think the perfect pack is the one you are currently building, and stressing about details, and staying up late looking at reference photos. That’s the perfect pack, because once you finished (you’re never actually finished but you know what I mean) and you get to wear it for the first time with full gear on, that must be the best feeling in the world. YOU make it “best” pack. Even if it’s made from cardboard, or paper mâché, or coke bottles, you made it.
I’m projecting here because I’m no where close to finishing, but even just putting my pack on in its current state when I took photos of my GB2 suit, there is that feeling that returned from childhood wearing that Kenner pack for hours and hours and telling people your name was Egon. It makes it a childhood wish into an adult reality.
You have just triggered a memory I had totally forgotten! I once (I’m guessing in '89 after seeing the film) attempted to make a slime blower from a couple of Lilt bottles and a large roll of grey card, with a washing up liquid bottle for the blower. All held together with Selotape and string for straps.
My friends had the blue RGB proton packs, and I always felt left out when we played Ghostbusters, so I knocked up something so I could join in. Shame there are no pictures of it.
The perfect pack is the one you create. No matter what anyone’s skill level is it is the one you made with your own hands. Yes any one of us would love to be able to have the bucks to have a 100% screen accurate hero pack made, but sadly we cannot. And I am not knocking anyone who has the skill set to fab very nearly parts and pieces that would be considered screen/cannon/hero accurate. I just find it more rewarding to go through the good the bad and the ugly of making as much of one’s own equipment as possible. Several of my favorite parts of any of my costumes or props is the research, the hunting for materials, the building process, the fixing of screw ups, and finally a nice product that is uniquely mine and maybe a few kudos from friends. It is the reliving of childhood as well. When we were kids most of us had the toys and would make things out of cardboard (numerous Christmas wrapping paper tubes ended up as lightsabers) or whatever our minds were capable of at that time. It keeps the magic and love of our favorite tv shows and movies alive long after the credits have passed.
