The Future of Matty

It was a lot better then your ■■■■■■ custom haha

It doesn’t matter how many you bought; it doesn’t purchase or excuse you any reason for your ridiculously ceaseless amount of absurd complaints.

If I were a betting man complaints of the line had more to do with it ending than sales.

All silliness aside, I have been guilty about bitching about the figures myself, and only in the past month has my attitude changed on the whole topic. I realized ** WE ARE CURRENTLY SPOILED ROTTEN ** when it comes to Ghostbuster related merchandise. I mean what better time to live in, I can actually walk into a store and buy Ghostbuster themed merchandise in a non movie year! Gexx it totally right, none of this was heard of when we were kids, the best we got was RGB (and that stuff rocked back then!) and a lot of us get up in arms because we can’t complete a set or something isn’t accurate, or Ray’s head is just a tiny bit too small…

The thing is, if we wanted movie based figures badly enough before Mattel offered them up, we were building our own. End of story. Which is why I came to the conclusion of being thankful rather than whine.

In the end, Mattel owed us ** NOTHING ** for the loss of the subscription, so the fact that they are going to give me something for free is amazing no matter what it was. They could have just said, thanks but no thanks, obviously theres not enough fans out there to carry this on and be done with it.

I plan on making a custom Gozer out of a DC Universe Star Sapphire figure, I thought it had the best match in figure to Gozer to begin with while still being a Mattel based 6 inch figure. I don’t know about casting it, but it would be an idea to create your own. Id wait for Tony Scoleri, as who knows what Mattel has up their sleeve for the 4th figure, they could end up blowing us all out of the water with a GB2 Janine with Tony Scoleri. I doubt it will be that as that require tooling 2 totally new figures but one can hope.

I think it would cost a lot more to make the figures than $20, most of us have seen the pains Capt Cyan had in just making a kit for the Proton Pack, yet alone casting an entire figure. Not as detailed but if you get a flaw in a joint, the piece is toast at that scale.

I would expect a custom cast figure to cost in the neighbourhood of 50-60 bucks, really no one on here has the means to do full production scale like Matty to get the prices down to the $20 mark.

I like my “■■■■■■” custom better then the original figure, so there you go. I dont take too much stock in what someone with a name like “craptacular” has to say about anything…

Do we not have moderators on this site?

I started this thread to discuss the future of the Matty Collector 6" line.

There are already TWO threads discussing the “Thank You” gift.

There is also middle school where you pick on people for their opinions.

ARE WE DONE YET? CAN WE GET BACK ON TOPIC?

Yes, there are mods. We don’t read every thread. That’s what the report button is for.

The title of the thread is “the future of matty” nowhere in the first post do you specify that it’s just about the 6" line.

See previous response. The topic will range to many points.

No, people pick on people because they’re jerks. Contesting an opinion and presenting different opinions isn’t picking on people. I haven’t read through this thread but if there’s something you don’t agree with either refute it publicly in a well thought-out response or else report it and if it’s against forum rules the mods will deal with it.

from the matty forums…

so it’s not my fault after all! whatta relief!

Jesus I hate people who complain about shit like this. Seriously? They’re goddamn toys. If it’s such an “epic” failure, then why buy it in the first place? Why even give it more than an iota of your attention if it’s such a horrible thing that they’re doing?

Fact: Mattel didn’t have to make Ghostbusters merchandise AT ALL. They’re the number one toy company - they don’t need Ghostbusters the way a smaller company like NECA banked on the line. That they bought up rights to an older line was pretty amazing, and the stuff they’ve made has been pretty remarkable, all things considered.

Fact: Mattel owes no one ANYTHING - if you want to buy something they make, you pay them money, and they give it to you. End of transaction. If you don’t like the product, or the way they do business, keep your wallet next to your ass and walk on with your mouth shut - it’s not for you. The end.

Fact: Mattel has gone beyond many expectations with this line, especially in regards to the props that they put out. They put out multiple figures in three different scales. They put out some pretty damn accurate and downright remarkable movie-style props, something I’ll bet none of us ever expected when we heard they got the license to begin with. Are the action figures the be all, end all? No, but I’d wager they could have put out a figure of a life-sized, fully functional Bill Murray-as-Peter Venkman android who walked around your house and made sarcastic remarks at the dinner table, and people would still find something to complain about. Could they have been better in very small, specific ways? Sure - but the product they put out is a hell of a lot better than the relative NOTHING that we had before (minus the Minimates, I guess), unless you want to argue the merits of the RGB line in regards to accuracy.

Fact: Almost every toy line eventually degrades into variants, simply because it’s not cost effective for Mattel to tool brand new sculpts (despite the fact that they have done so with Vinz, Dana, Peck, Vigo, a number of ghost characters, etc.). Complaining about it is redundant and doesn’t do anything to add to the debate. You’re talking about a pair of movies with very few extraneous characters to begin with - this isn’t Star Wars with hundreds of unique possibilities. Getting variants of the main four guys makes sense here, and I think they did fine with what they gave us.

Fact: They are making toys for a nearly thirty-year old movie that, while still well-known, is not something hot on many people’s (read: children’s) minds. While there are of course adult collectors (hence the entire Matty lines to begin with), Mattel makes its bread and butter off of toy sales to children. This is not the case with the GB line. It was bound to run out of steam eventually.

Fact: JESUS CHRIST THEY’RE JUST TOYS. When Mattel gives up the license, no doubt, at some point in the future, we’ll see some other company take a swing at making these toys all over again, and no doubt, we’ll see another group of people coming out to act like said company stole their first born child and dismembered it on live television.

Joe - this isn’t directed solely at you, but to all of the people who write diatribes like the one you quoted above. I’m not saying there aren’t logical and warranted gripes about certain aspects of how Mattel has run their business in regards to this line, but all things considered, it’s a pretty nice set of merchandise that they’ve made available over these past few years. If anyone expected it to go on for years and years like Hasbro has done with their Star Wars license, they were totally fooling themselves. If in fact the fanboy complaints played a part in Mattel wanting to ramp down and/or end this line, I can’t say I blame them entirely, because a lot of the complaints (i.e. the down-to-the-millimeter criticism of the PKE) have been majorly stupid and uncalled for.

Be disappointed, be sad, whatever, but being illogically indignant and raising pitchforks over this stuff - come on.

Leave the personal attacks out of it guys.

I wasn’t trying to be personal on the subject. Just pointing some things out.

Fact of the matter I respect Joe and his right to an opinion on things.

I also like his custom work and respect him as an artist.

Really just asking for the same and maybe a little gratitude shown to Mattey.

Anyways..

Sorry about the whole troll thing Joe..

But do you respect him as a dresser?

ehhhhh.. more or less.

I personally don’t see how each figure selling out on their site means: “Nobody is buying our figures.” Isn’t that the exact opposite of not buying?

Two things.

They don’t sell out fast enough.

They probably don’t actually sell out.

matty keeps all their “sold out” merchandise in the same warehouse where the ark of the covenant is stored, as well as items from unsolved x-files cases…

The current ‘year-round’ GB figs (Ray & Peter) were once “Sold Out”

As well as all the rest that re-appear for the October sale

Thanks for the props Joe! I’ve been missing from the site for a while with my little girl being sick, but I’ll have some new pics and sketches posted in the next day or so. I encourage anyone to drop by and let me know what you think or are looking forward to.

Honestly, if you think about it - the Mattel line ran its course already in the eyes of the general public/broader customer base…

The average ordinary customer will only buy the core figures for characters and then the ancillary characters usually end up as peg warmer novelties. It’s been that way since we were kids and it continues to be that way as we’re uh… you know… bigger kids. Everyone wants Batman and the Joker, but you can only get a couple suckers to buy an Alfred action figure. It’s the whole reason Neca ultimately failed, because you or I will buy Gozer and the Terror Dogs, but random people passing the shelves won’t give them a second thought.

Average customer will look at Ghostbusters and say, “Sweet! I’ll pick up Ray, Peter, Egon, Winston and that, guy, you know the funny one that puts the strainer on his head, maybe. I don’t know.”

Average poster on GBFans says, “Mattel is completely ■■■■■■■■ on me because they haven’t made an action figure for the Sedgewick Hotel Maid complete with the flaming toilet paper rolls that I’ve been posting and posting and posting about! Didn’t they see my petition and my Facebook Hotel Maid support group!?!?”

If you look at it that way, which is how I’m sure Mattel has (because even though we’d like to think they’re doing everything for US, they are a business and need to think about the bigger picture) they’ve already released the core figures including as many variants as possible without going into Stealth Attack Egon (or Jungle Camo Peter if you will).

They’ve been nothing but honest and revealing about their reasoning behind things (Club Ecto was made to gauge interest on the ancillary characters from the “■■■■■■■■” fans to see if the production run would be worth their time and investment and they flat out said that it wasn’t). They threw us a couple bones with short-run B-tier characters (Rookies, Vigos and Zuuls, oh my). And then called it a day.

They’re still obviously remaining dedicated to their prop line which seems to sell like gangbusters (see what I did there? Eh? Eh?) and again, because it has a broader appeal than to just you and I, the GBFans poster lurkers. They can sell the ■■■■ out of those to fans casual and dedicated alike and at a higher price point that makes it worth while.

Eventually with some distance, those that are pessimistic about this whole thing will look back on the awesomeness that was had. Sure, there was potential of going even further that would have been great - but it was that way back in 1992 as well before those green amphibians took over. But what a ride it was. Look at what we got: lots of figures that we never had the chance to buy that we’ve wanted since 1984. So you had to refresh your browser a couple times to get them, so what? Isn’t that part of the fun of collecting? And after waiting almost 30 years, was it really that big of a deal? (One last parenthetical for good measure.)
