Universal Studios Ghostbusters show question

I know the show is closed, but did anyone get any decent pictures of the packs these guys carried while it was still running? If I remember correctly the weren’t terribly accurate?! And I wonder what happened to them when Universal shut the show down? Anybody know? Just remembering the good ole days I guess.

wow, they had proton packs? last time i went was a few years ago and all they had was the ecto-1 and maybe a trap (the dumb@$$ actor was using it as if it were a pke meter)

Wow, talk about downhill. Ya the show that I went to see, I was pretty young… probably around 10 years old… which would be 17 years ago…

They actually had packs. If I remember correctly, it started with them hanging outside this building… then you all went inside a big auditorium that had a replica set of the rooftop of Dana’s apartment from the first movie. There was a giant pane of glass that ran floor to ceiling between you and the stage. That was so they could project the ghosts and proton streams onto it to give one AMAZING illusion! They had the hole show coreographed ahead of time and the ghostbusters ran around battling the terror dogs and zoul once more… I think the marshmallow man even showed up, but that was a huge prop…

It was a really cool show but I can’t really remember the packs.

I remember I made my dad ask the tour guide or attendant or whatever… if we could get a closer look at the packs… sadly, and expectedly, I was shut down!

That’s too bad they don’t run that anymore… that was really cool. So nobody got pictures of that one?!

Which makes me think… if, and I say IF, they did make another movie… wouldn’t it be cool if they did something like the Borg experience ride in Vegas!!! You could get strapped up with a pack and actually get to help out the ghostbusters! That would kick soooooo much, ya know! The effects would be tricky, but I’m sure somehow they could pull it off!

I believe there’s a video of the Spooktacular up over at Ghostbusters International. The quality isn’t the greatest, however, so you might not be able to get a good look at the packs.

That sounds like that would’ve been awesome to see. I went to universal maybe 2 years ago. Where they had the firehouse was a “Twister” set. The ghostbusters were the “extreme ghostbusters” and they had a show with Beetlejuice where they sang and danced together, not busting him. There was no light show, no real ghosts and the actors like I mentioned earlier had 1 ghost trap between the 4 of them and were using it as a “spectral energy detector”

Yeah Ive seen the video on Ghostbusters International and i dont remember seeing any good shots of the proton packs.

I wonder what there going to do with the Ecto-1???

I went to see that show alot as a kid. To make a small correction, the proton streams were actually a set of green lights that were on a boom-like device that would swing out so the GB could place his wand near the start of the firing sequence. Either way it looked pretty damn cool.

The packs- they had lights, and were decently accurate, as I recall, but the throwers were horrible. I have a pic of the bottom of the gun while I’m holding it, and I remember the top of it was nothing more than black metal wrapped in black electrical tape to keep the hose attached. The thrower itself was nothing more than a black metal box with a handle at both ends. It was kinda sad…

I cried when I realized my Ghostbusters weren’t coming back. I really did. (hey- I was ten. Gimme a ■■■■■■ break)

The Ecto-1 was pretty impressive for what it was. I don’t think it was actually a Cadillac Ambulance, but a Chevy Stationwagon type of deal. The roof rack looks pretty good, and the paint scheme is dead on, but it had fallen into horrible disrepair. I was told by one of the workers there that they were going to retire it and either put it in the boneyard or send it back to the Studio for repairs and storage.

Oh- and give the XGBs a break- they never had a PKE meter in Orlando. I know, they should make one, but at least they’re trying…

I went back in 92 when I was 9 years old and by then I’ve never seen the ghostbusters movies but to me that was the best show at universal orlando. The effects were awesome.

I know they have to shoot for the current market and all… but c’mon, replacing the Back to the Future ride for a Simpsons ride!!!

That’s hideous! Why not a revamp? With the current technology, they could really make that ride kick!

Sorry, I just found that in my searching for pics of the old ghostbusters show. I’m depressed!

BACK TO THE GHOSTBUSTERS… or MEANWHILE AT HQ?!

I just found this, but I’m not sure if it’s the same show or not but still makes me smile… now THESE packs look pretty good!

and it’s from this site…

As far as the BTTF ride, I believe they’re only closing the Florida one. As far as I know, the Cali one is still there. Oh, and I heard that it was being replaced by some kind of The Fast and the Furious themed-ride (I read about all this in a thread over on Proptopia).

Back to GB…Until recently, I didn’t even know there ever was a GB attraction at Universal. Was there ever one in Cali? Man, I would be upset if I discovered that they had one that I didn’t know about when I was there several years ago.

I went the last year they had the actual ride/show itself open. The theme was where Louis was doing a kind of informercial where he was selling designer packs including a pink one, and somehow it lead to the rooftop sequence. I remember the gift shop had pretty much nothing left at all. I still have my pamphlets and my Universal Studios souvenier book somewhere. It had a two page spread showing the rooftop and a pick of Dan with the studios ecto 1. One a side note I used to do electrical work and my boss was one of the electricians who worked on the show’s construction, he said when it was almost done there was a water main break in the building that ruined all of the ghosts and set and they had to pretty much rebuild from scratch putting the shows opening back quite a ways.

Here are some photos of some post cards I got when I was there a decade or so ago. They copywrite date is 1993 so it’s been a while.

And here are some close-ups of the packs the guys are wearing…sadly, these are promotional images and the packs look to be studio grade props from the archives…V-hooks and all…so I doubt these are the ones they used in the actual show.

yeah I actually have a pretty good family video and the packs themselves look very accuarte with lights and all but like Absolute said before the neutrona wands are garbage I could do better I think i’m not a prop builder but yeah for the most part at the time and age we were it was just fine at the time. Its a dam shame they took the show away for stupid twister but what are ya gonna do.. 8)

wow, I wouldn’t have expected those show packs to look as accurate as they seem to. That’s pretty cool!

MAN I wish I had seen that when I was young…:frowning: Oh well..who knows, maybe they’ll bring it back and make it better!

I doubt that. Executives these days seem to want only fresh, new ideas. They’ll spout gargbage about people not being able to “relate” to older things as well. It’s like with the BTTF ride closing. Read the article on BTTF.com Back to the Future™, and you’ll see how stupid and short-sighted executuves can be.

Spiderfan… that is EXACTLY the show I was talking about! That was one of the coolest things I got to see as a kid! Those pictures are great thanks!

Still though, I wonder what happened to those packs when the show was closed!

I’m guessing whoever worked for the show or at Universal at the time probably took them home.

I remember a few years ago there was a Stunt Show Proton Pack on ebay that went for a pretty penny. It was just the pack without the wand but it was still pretty cool.

the last thing I heard about the packs from a source on here I dont remember who but I had brought up the same topic they said packs and uniforms are inside USF prop vault which is pretty big im sure thats their location i’ve seen the vault going into the old earth quake ride which im not sure if its still there any longer.

does any one have a video of the ride i would love to see it because i was a big fan of ghostbusters when i was 5yrs old and i went to go see it when i was in the show and louis takes you to where the ghosts are i got afraid and the next year i went to Univesal it was gone and im mad how i could never see it.
