Anyone ever tried using Plasti-Dip on their gun grips?

I know it’s not accurate, so far as the hero packs go, but I think if the packs were real, those handles would definitely be rubberized, and not just painted wood.

So has anyone tried this?

An easier solution might be a few coats of latex house paint.. it’s cheap, easier to work with, and water cleanup.. plastidip is nasty stuff.

plasti-dip is great stuff!!

Yeah that would work really well, if you use the spray then do it from far away and you will get a nice matt texture!

Go for it!

Plasti dip comes in spray form now? Only way I saw it in the past was in a dip can.

Might be worthwhile then in the spray form. Mu handgrip “plan” is to use insulating foam (same kind that goes on the top of the alice pack, tighten some zip ties evenly, and I was going to put a few coats of latex house paint over that, but if plastidip comes in a spray, I could coat it in that instead, most likely in one coat.

Not sure if it’s reactive to insulation foam though.

I’ve used it. Its fine -it does smell pretty strong.

Make sure you spray the grips before attaching them, otherwise you get the dip all over the handle (yeah, I’ve done it the hard way)

Well, next trip to Lowe’s guess I have something else on my shopping list.. LOL!

I assume the smell goes away after a few days. Or a week in the case of my belt circuit which I colored with permanent magic marker, then rubbed in mud to age it and get off the excess, then washed, covered in cologne and old spice deoderant, and finally a layer of shoe polish to attempt to seal it because the “permanent” marker was still coming off it a little.

Yeah, leather dye is definitely the way to go there.

or black shoe polish?

Like I said, I put black shoe polish on it. And I don’t think black shoe polish alone would have covered up the original color.

There were some areas the marker didn’t cover completely and the shoe polish didn’t do much better. Maybe if I scuffed it up really good with sandpaper, because it was a pretty smooth surface, it would do a better job… but I kinda doubt it.

You could of course put tons of shoe polish on there, but if you used that much, it would surely rub off on your suit.

Anyway I’ll post some pics of my results in that area later. I wonder if maybe there is a fabric sealant like the fabric paint I bought for my pads. I could use that to seal the backside of the leather at least to give me some more insurance.

Easiest way I’ve always found to color things with some give like that is black acrylic paint.. the cheap stuff you buy at walmart.

I don’t think it’ll stick though after shoe polish is applied.

I got a little sidetracked today.. my flight suits, pistol belts and alice packs arrived today.. Woo Hoo!

My suit is a tad tight across the stomach, but I have a week or two to look a few pounds. Pistol belt though actually is larger then I expected, and it was going to be the real problem I originally thought.

I also posted on the board asking how the hell to get OUT of the alice pack frame, until I saw the shoulder adjustment straps under the armpits.. WHEW!

Just getting all that on, even without the packs was pretty cool!

You put the alice pack on and then couldn’t get it off and posted on the forum asking for help?

Hehehe!

This reminds me of a thread I once read on Fark. I don’t want to spoil the subject. You’ll just have to see it for yourself.

Well I wanted to, but figured out the alice frame strap releases..

Tried on the damned flight suit again, and there’s just no way I’m going to be able to wear it.. so I’ll call the company tomorrow, and see if I can get a 48 or 50 long.

Glad I didn’t wait till mid october on this!

I don’t even have any and all I can say is “OUCH!!!” :angryvigo:

LOL!!! BTW, Lady Ghost, my wife is also joining the ranks as well. Her flight suit fit fine, only thing is because of her height, the pack is gonna ride high on her.. not much that can be done about that though.

I often wondered about making a slightly scaled down version of the pack for ladies since ladies tend to be shorter than men. Myself, I’m fairly tall for a woman at 5’ 7", so it probably wouldn’t bother me as much.

That cheesecake canned halloween outfit is kinda fun n a odd fashion. We could probably scale everything down some for her, but knowing her, she will want it full sized.

or even cheaper and easier get some rubber bike grips but the old school kind with the finger grips. found them at my local bike shop 4 bucks the pair.

I looked for those bike grips at the local bike shops befor buying resin ones. No dice.

The walmart here carries them, and I’m sure you could find bike handle grips online if you really decide you want them.

Wonder if there is a paintball gun grip that might also work?

Just to give an update on my idea… I tried plasti dip spraypaint on a resin part with no primer and it went on fine, but the spray requires like four coats, each with a half an hour dry time, and the plastic coating you get is super thin and has too much “grip” to it. It’s not something your hand will slide over smoothly like a plastic bike grip.

So if you want plastic grips for the gun, your best bet would be to have to have some molded out of real rubber I guess. Or a foam form dipped in real rubber.
