Hey guys, good news for some, and bad for others, but it looks like the info was wrong…again. Arg.

Although the quote from the head of Columbia Pictures does infer that with all the rumors and prognosticating that the internet has been up to they know there is much support for a thirds film. Hopefully more updates to follow.

According to the president of Columbia Pictures, which is developing the new Ghostbusters movie, Judd Apatow is NOT producing the third installment of the paranormal film.

“It’s not true,” Doug Belgrad, president of Columbia Pictures tells the LA Times. “We have some great new writers working on a new script, but Judd isn’t involved. Judging from the frenzy on the Internet, there still seems to be plenty of interest in the idea of doing another film, so we’re certainly taking that as a good sign.”

Apatow fanatics the world over are likely crushed by this news, but, for the record, we didn’t report it as fact. We said Apatow was “reportedly producing” the film because /Film and Production Weekly passed on the rumor. In fact, we may have even written “rumored” originally and changed it because we thought we needed to use “rumored” in the second bullet point, which seemed even more dubious.**

*Judd Apatow’s name has been attached the rumors about Ghostbusters 3 since they first began, with all reports saying he would be the producer for the film written by The Office writers Lee Eisenberg and Greg Stupnitsky. Now the production has gotten so close to actually happening that Production Weekly is listing it-- and wouldn’t you know, Apatow Productions is right there in charge.

Sure, it’s not huge news-- we could probably have assumed from the first rumor that Apatow would be involved, given that he’s the reigning demi-god of comedy. But the inclusion in Production Weekly means the whole thing is actually happening, beyond just Dan Aykroyd and Bill Murray getting asked awkward questions about the project’s status. No actor names are attached to the Production Weekly piece, but at this point, it seems like only a matter of time before the gentlemen prepare to suit up a third time. *

Again there is no official green light announcement at this time, but this is a step in the right direction.And no this isnt jump up and down news, but definitely lends more weight to all the current rumors. Take all rumors/announcements with a grain of salt until someone is in front of a camera filming the thing would be my advice though :slight_smile:

*If this is ineed true, and this “Production Weekly” that they keep going on about is “the written scripture” [so-to-speak], then shoot me now…

*However, me thinks this is just more “rumor plague” from the major media outlets…You know - The supposedly reputable ones…Being as everyone involved in said outlets have been riding the “Apatow Train” since day one…It’s like the “cool” thing to do and all :sigh: …

*It’s apparently “official” - “Ghostbusters” as we know it [and have for the last 25 years], has gone in the toilet [pun intended]…Or at least it appears to be…

*And not only that - The “5 Years Later” formula - AGAIN?! :sigh: …Wasn’t it enough the first time? You know like almost exactly 20 years ago? The only time in a official franchise capacity that they haven’t used the “going back into buisness” mantra [not counting the comic books or manga and the last season or two of RGB] since 1989 is the upcoming video game…

*Is that really the only idea that the “Office” guys could come up with? Between this and the upcoming Platinum Dunes “A Nightmare On Elm Street” remake [amongst other things], they [and the rest of Hollywood] are pretty much insuring I’ll never see the inside of an actual theater again :sigh: …

To everyone who is excited about the idea of a new GB movie: Please, give it a chance. We’ve waited all this time, and finally it looks like we might be getting our wish; just hope for the best.

maybe they wrote that logline as a metaphore…in place of “the ghostbusters comes back to the silver screen” …

but, i WANT to see the fab four together one last time.

It’s crazy how close it is to happening this time. I’m still thinking it probably won’t though. I’d love to be wrong though.

I’d almost love to be right in that it’ll never happen. Some of us have built their expectations up so far that even the best film that could be made will likely not live up to it.

I hope that the tagline really is just refering to it being 25 years since the last GB movie. Otherwise, it seems like blatant disregard for the game, which I really doubt the cast, especially Dan and Harold, would let them get away with. The game doesn’t need to be directly referenced, and I’m not expecting to see Ryan French added to the cast, but if the game is canon, than the movie will screw that up. Especially with the game seemingly setting up company expansion with hiring new team members, it’s a perfect jumping off point to just say they continued hiring and the “new young busters” in this movie are a result of that.

Hopefully someone is able to get this on track. I think the people attatched could muster enough respect for GB to do it right, and I want to see one last adventure with the original cast involved, but I think the writers are being super lazy if this is what they’ve got.

I think people are getting a little too worked up about the Apatow part, seeing as how most of the movies people are complaining about when saying this is going to be like them are mostly written by Apatow, Evan Goldberg, or Rogen with a story by Apatow, which isn’t the case with this film.

I’m still holding out hope that any lame ideas get shot down when Dan gets his say in the script this Summer. Think of how carefully they treated the video game, making sure the ‘non-GB’ stuff didn’t get mixed in with the good stuff. I can’t help but think they’d be even more careful to make sure a new movie doesn’t fall flat in that area.

I’m glad the writers of the Office are involved, since I like the show and the brand of humor that’s there. I think it fits well with this franchise.

As far as the Apatow group is concerned, I really can’t comment because I don’t really watch new movies. I just hope Rogen isn’t involved, because I don’t want any pot smoking GBs.

I hope the video game is, if not referenced directly, at least respected by the new movie. I like the idea of interns over the years, and seeing how that evolves from 1991 to 2010. There’s plenty of wiggle room there for writers to work with, but I would be disappointed if they were out of business again after Vigo until now.

I actually liked the beginning of GB2, how they were getting back into business. Most people went into the theaters for that movie thinking of how great things were for the guys at the end of the first movie, and it was an immediate twist to see how the city screwed them over and put them out of business to fend for themselves in ways that fit their personalities. I felt it helped develop the characters better to see what they did when there was no GB.

That being said, it’s been done, and we need something fresh that piggybacks off of both movies and the game, without being repetitive. And again, I don’t think Aykroyd would let that happen (especially since so many were disappointed with the repetition of GB2).
