I’m in the process of putting the finishing touches to my pack and have been looking at weathering it down. So far, all I’ve done is run a silver pen around some of the corners and raised edges, simulating what happens in real life on black anodised metal after being used for some time, but would welcome advice on how far to go/ how to do it etc.
I’d recommend taking some sand paper and just scuffing the black paint in a few places since that happens too. Also, this stuff called Rub’N’Buff works well, we used that to weather airsoft guns. Also, and i’m not sure how kean you’d be to do this, but dust your house, clean the dust from your computer, and then apply it to the corners of your pack(the inner edges) since dust builds up like that. You could also sprinkly baby powder from a few feet away to give it a dusty/dirty look.

I airbrushed mine. I know its not really that practical if you dont have the set up already, but the end effect was great.
I also stood about 3 feet back and ‘dusted’ the entire surface with some heavily diluted silver, to take away from the plastic look that the black paint gives it. After that i did all of the edges and corners etc closer and with a finer spray.
End result made all of the paint seem like steel, with smooth weathering around all of the typical areas.

As for weathering…how about some coloured pencils…scrape some shavings off maybe a brown pencil (left with powder residue) and then smudge that on in the appropriate places, to give it the aged look. If it doesn’t look right, it can easily be wiped off.
I’ve had great success with using simple techniques.
First, for the paint job on the pack, use a mixture of flat, glossy, and satin finish paints. If you use flat paint, let it dry then rub the paint to a dull sheen with a cloth. It gives it a more “used” look.
Second for dust and other weathering effects use baby powerder. I’m not kidding. Don’t “pour” the powder onto the pack - sort of tap the container and make the stuff airborne (use a mask if possible) and fill the room with baby powder dust. Then let it settle onto the pack. It’s really easy. Then use your fingers to make smudge marks all over the place. Then use more baby powder, then more smudges. This works best if you used satin/glossy finish paint for the pack.
Third for metal weathering effects on the gun all you need is a package of q-tips and some silver/chrome Testors bottled model paint. The paint is like $2 at a local hobby store. Shake the paint up, dip the q-tip in the paint and then wait for the q-tip to be almost dry. The paint will get gummy and hard to apply. It’s at this stage where you can use it on the edges of the gun. Roll the end of the q-tip over the edge and you’ll get a nice wear pattern like in the pics of my pack and gun.
