New Illustrated pack plans: Sneak Peek!

The down-shot of the pattern is meant to show the ion arm as if you cut it from a single piece of aluminum and bent it around that form. Whether you construct a form to bend it around or use the side of a workbench to do the bends, that pattern will be the same. You could also heat bend the form out of styrene but that’s quite a bit trickier.

Great to see you back in the game, and at it again. Like many, your contributions are something I poured over when I started out.

I already know this will be great. Thanks for doing this! However, what I think what we are all really dying for are plans to make that 1989 pack in the first post…

Hah, I agree.

Alright. Is this just a way to do it in a single piece if someone so chooses, or is this being touted as screen accurate.

It’s merely yet another means to the same end.

Until one of us gets a GB I hero and dissects it for reverse engineering purposes it’s all conjecture. You could weld it up from individual plates as well if you so chose.

I’m all about options. No two people are ever at the same skill level so I like to give people as many choices as I can when I do up plans.

I mean,…at the end of the day, does it really matter how the screen used was constructed if the same effect is achieved?

Personally, there were so many variations between packs/between movies you could spend from now till rapture trying to figure out what’s accurate.

For my money, I’d rather have authentic looking finished gear be it aluminum or styrene or fiberglass.

I think it’s interesting that to be accurate you would need things like a spot of unpainted booster tube, a shock mount bent upward, thinned fiberglass (so light shows through), electrical tape on the barrel ear, a tad bit of wire showing near the base of the front handle. All of these are seen on screen used packs during the film thus all being accurate parts for a pack. I think finding out what is accurate is important but so is trying to make what they were aiming for.

PS Keep up the great work. I still drool over those packs you have in the prop section.

Being accurate is so subjective when it comes to building a pack.

When trying to replicate a pack 100%, your just kidding yourself.

I completely agree.

Okay. I was going to argue the seams based on reference pictures, but it sounds like you’ve put a lot of thought into this (plus you are right about the high level of variation) so I’ll wait for the final plans before questioning anything.

I am, by the way, very grateful for you guys doing this and also very excited
